    Old English

    Around the 5th century we first tarted noticing the old English. It was a strange form of English, and was very hard to read, since they used odd letters ever after the runic alphabet was invented.

    Middle English

    Between 1066 and 1470 England was a trilingual nation. The English language became very affected by France and Latin, and therefor later became middle English.

    Early modern English

    1476-1800
    A lot of things happened during this time, the english people suddently needed words for new things and inventions.
    the first printing press was made in 1476. I was now easy to print a book and now the english language was lending word from other languages.
  • Dictionary

    In 1755 the first proper dictionary was made. In 1762 came another and again in 1774.
  • American English

    It started between 1776 and 1806
    When america became independent from Britain in 1776, they wanted their own language, therefor, in 1806 the first American dictionary was published.
  • Modern English

    From 1800
    The changes in the English language still changed, but at a much slower pace. The biggest changes at the time was new words for new tecnologies and science.

  • Global English- now

    English is spoken widely around the world.
    The reason behind this is because it is tought in schools around the world. Britain had colonies around the world that now is an Enlish speaking country. The US has made a huge impact on the world with big hollywood movies, books and politics. I believe, that it is, by now, almost impossible to live a life, not knowing a single word of English.
