The Yamasee War
The Yamasee War broke out among the local tribes of South Carolina, primarily the Yamasee, against the Carolina colony due to their expansion of rice and tobacco farms into Indian lands and the capture of their women as payment. The Carolina colony was nearly eliminated until the Cherokee joined forces with the English. The increase in demand for American goods like tobacco and rice is why the English settlers kept expanding their farms into Indian territory. -
The War of Jenkin's Ear
War between the British and Spanish over control of present day Georgia and its trade routes. The war received its name because a British Captain named Robert Jenkins, had his ear cut off by the Spanish as punishment for raiding one of their ships. Jenkins later took his ear to parliament, causing an outrage. This event tremendously hurt both parties in trading across the Atlantic and eventually led to the end of the war. Georgia was established years after the war and was under British control. -
Pontiac's Rebellion
After Britain’s defeat of the French, an Indian resistance grew against them. Many tribes allied with the French who supplied them with weapons. Pontiac’s Rebellion was a powerful group of tribes led by Ottawa war chief Pontiac and spiritual leader Neolin. Neolin’s teachings were to expel all European culture and drive them away with war. The war began in Fort Detroit and Fort Pitt, and spread along Virginia and Pennsylvania after that. -
The American Revolutionary War
The war began in MA after tea was dumped in the Boston Harbor as protest to the tea tax. Great Britain sent troops to seize weapons, but they all began to shoot at each other as Britain troops marched to Concord and Lexington. Congress came together in the summer of 1776 and decided to break all ties with Great Britain, and on July 4th the Declaration of Independence was created.The treaty of Paris was finalized in 1783, recognizing the United States as independent. -
The Northwest Indian War
Americans began to try to take control over western New York and Pennsylvania. The response was the Northwest Indian War by the Western Confederacy, a group of natives lead by Mohawk leader Joseph Brant. They pledged to resist American Intrusion into the Northwest. The war lasted ten years, with defeat of the Indians, and the creation of the Treaty of Greenville, which granted the United States Ohio. -
The French Revolution
The French revolution began as a triumph of republican government over monarchy, but then the French king was executed in 1793. The years to follow resulted in violence to those who were viewed as a threat to their new government system. When the French declared war against Britain, they requested the money it had lent America during their revolution. Due to the Paris Treaty, the United States could not do that and was declared neutral in 1793.
