The spread of corn to Europe starting around 1492, allowed for maize to become a staple crop in Europe. Europe was able to grow and cultivate corn to make it an important food source in thier environment. This event relates to the environment because it involves the trade of a crop across environments and cultures. -

Sugar Being Brought to New World
On Christopher Columbus's voyage in 1493, in the New World, sugar was brought to be planted. This sugar eventually boomed, along with other places in the world, and became a popular crop, with plantations occuring in vast numbers. This is a continuity event because the spread of sugar allowed for a new crop to be available, helping the environments affected through trade. This relates to the environment SPICE theme because it involves the spread of a crop to a different environment. -

In the late 15th Century, in Europe, diseases, particularly Syphilis, was spread into the environment. This spread came from world trade from the West, impacting European environments. This is a change event, because it breaks the trend of global trade helping the environment, and hurts the environment through disease. This relates to the environment because it outlines the spread diseases across environments. -

Introduction of Horses to Americas
In the early 1500's or very late 1400's, horses were brought to the Americas. This trade of horses allowed for horses to be a present animal that could be farmed in the Americas, and therefore became part of the environment. This event relates to the environment because it involves the spread of an animal to a different environment. -

Trade to China From South America
Around the 15th to 16th century in China, the trade with South America boomed and allowed China to import crops such as maize, sweet potatoes, and peanuts. These crops being introduced to Chinese low water environments were especially useful to decrease famine. This is a continuity event because it continues the trend of the global trade helping the environment, in this case throught the crops. This is an environment theme because the trade of and spread of crops will effect the environment. -

The introduction of cattle to North America in 1521 by Christopher Columbus allowed North America to have more beef, leather, and other materials that benefit a society from cattle. This spread of cattle is a continuity event, because the cattle spread brought new animals to a society positively impacting the environment. This relates to the environment because it involves the spread of animals to new environments, changing the environments. -

Potosi Silver Mine
Around the 16th century in Peru, the Potosi silver mine began its excavation of silver. This mine tore apart the a mountain, causing destruction to the environment in that way. This event is related to environment because it involves mining, which destroys natural landscapes. -
Potatoes Arriving in Europe
Around the 16 and end of 16th century, in Europe, the global trade/introduction to potatoes caused Europe to be able to grow this crop even in their cold and thin soiled environments. Potatoes became a staple crop for Europe. This is a continuity event because it continues the trend of the emergence of global trade positively impacting the environment. This relates to environment because it details the spread and introduction of a crop into a new environment. -
British Slave Trade and Diseases
Around the 1660's in Europe, Europe decided it wanted to become a direct member of the slave trade with Africa. The new slaves that were being traded brought in diseases, and therfore damaged the environment. Brazilian Gold rush
In Brazil in 1695, gold was discovered available to be mined. This caused a rush of gold miners to flood into the area, creating a large amount of mines. The influx destroyed coastal agriculture, along with tearing up the land. This is related to environment because the even directly involves land being destroyed along with agriculture. This is a change event because it breaks the trend of trade helping the environment by bringing good crops in.
