The Early Years

  • Development of the Senses

    Development of the Senses
Because the brain develops so rapidly (it is 90% the weight of an adult brain by 5 yrs), the senses develop at a rapid pace too. Sensory developmet happens in the physical domain. It is now that kids gain more control of their eyes & the ability to focus. Not until age 6, however, can they focus & read smaller printed words & sentences. Later in preschool, they become more aware of the perimeter & context of an image. Sharpness of hearing improves as well.

  • Intuitive Thought

    Intuitive Thought
During Piaget's preoperational period, from about 4-7 years, kids develop intuitive thought, which combines their "primitive reasoning" with their "avid acquisition of knowledge about the world" (Feldman, 223) and happens in the cognitive domain. This is marked by large curiosity, over abundance of "why?" & the feeling that they have all of the answers to life's questions. Kids begin to understand functionality, or that action & outcome work together in certain patterns.

  • Memory

    Memory
Studies show that preschooler's memory does not gain accuracy until after age 3, then increases in accuracy throughout preschool. 3 yr. olds can remember simple sequences or respond to basic open ended questions. How soon after the event happens that the memory is again accessed can affect its accuracy as well. Many preschoolers remember events in scripts, or broad representations of what actually happened.
