John Cabot
Many people still wanted to find a westward route to india for spices so they sent John Cabot on a voyage to the west. Cabot thought that there might be a water route through the americas but instead he landed on the far northern Atlanic coast of North America. Like others he had failed to find a northwest route to india. Soon after that the europeans gave up on the idea of finding a route. -

He made another voyage and reached south america, after this voyage he made several other voyages to the new world bringing things from the old world for the native americans and bringing back things for themselves and their coutnry. They both benifited from this trade but the native americans were almost completly killed by the diseases that were brought over.This trade between worlds became known as the Columbian Exchange. -

Juan Ponce de Leon
Spain had claimed much of the land in the new world. Luan was a spanish official in the new world and had explored and settled on the island of Puerto Rico. Noticing his potential spain then told hi to explore lands north of cuba. -

He set out on an expidition and he landed on teh east coast of Florida (Juan named it this after spanish world for flowers). They then sailed through the Florida Keys. -

Giovanni da Verrazano
Giovanni an italian navigator was sent on a voyage west, he first reached what is now North Carolina's Outer Banks. When he got there he thought he saw the pacific ocean but it was just the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. He then explored further up the coast and when he returned to France he wrote a report to the king tellign him about his findings but the kind was occupied and did not sponser any more voyages to the americas. -

Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon
Ayllon led a group of over 500 men, women, and children to a river he called "Jordan". This colony eventually failed due to disease and starvation, then the colonists were took to present day South Carolina. But they didn't do any better there , disease and starvation overwhelmed the settlers. Ayllon died along with a lot of other people but the remaining 150 colonists returned to Hispaniola. -

Hernando de Soto
Soto saild from Havana, Cuba to the west coast of Florida. From there him and his men marched to Tallahassee, Florida. They spent the winter there then in the spring him and his men crossed Georgia, South Carolina, and finally they passed through the western tip of North Carolina. They were the first to see these regions, they met new tribes of Indians to. Soto eventually died but many of his men returned to Mexico. -

Jean Ribault
Ribault was sent by France to set up a colony in North America. They were called Huguenots, they settled in a place called Port Royal, but eventually gave up in 1564 and returned to France. Then the same year another band of Huguenots settled at Fort Caroline. -

Pedro Menendez de Aviles
He led troops from spain and set up a camp south of Fort Caroline. Aviles captured fort caroline and killed most of the french defenders and then set up many more camps throughout Florida to strengthen Spain's grip.
