King Williams War
King Williams War and Queen Annes War are the earliest contests over North America by European powers. It was mostly British Colonist against French coureurs de bois, both sides recruiting whatever Indian Allies they could. Neither Britain nor the French saw that it was worth deploying troops for North America, but when Britain did get involved they badly defeated the French. Britain had been rewarded with Acadia, and the wintry wastes of
Newfoundland and Hudson Bay. -
French Found New Orleans
In an attempt to block Spain on the Gulf of Mexico, French officials planted several fortified posts in modern day Mississipi, and Louisianna. They considered the most important to be New Orleans. This outpost also tapped the fur trade of the huge interior valley because it was at the mouth of the Mississipi river. -
War of Jenkins Ear
This war broke out in 1739 between the British and the Spaniards, and was confined to the Caribbean Sea and to the Georgia Colony. This small scale war with Spain would go on to merge with the large scale war of the Austrian Succesion. -

The Battle of Quebec
The Battle of Quebec in 1759 is considered one of the most significant battles in British and American history. When Montreal fell in 1760, the French lost all of Canada completely. By the peace settlement at Paris (1763), French power was thrown completely off the continent of North America, leaving behind a fertile French population that is to this day a strong minority in Canada.
