  • Galileo's Telescope

Galileo never initially created the telescope. He recieved information of the telescope after the Duch created it in 1608. Although Galileo never originally created the telescope he made it famous. Galileo made his first telescope in 1609, modeled after telescopes produced in other parts of Europe that could magnify objects three times. With this telescope, he was able to look at the moon, discover the four satellites of Jupiter, observe a supernova, and proved our soloar system heliocentric.
  • Sputnik 1

Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957. After Sputnik 1 was launched the space race began.
  • Sputnik 2

The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 2 into space. The probe carried a small dog named Laika into orbit.
  • Explorer 1

Explorer 1, the first American satellite to reach orbit, is launched. It carried scientific equipment that lead to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belt.
  • Explorer 2

Explorer 2 was launced on March 5, 1958. It faild to reach orbit becuase the final rocket didn't ignite.
  • VanGuard 1

The Vanguard 1 satellite is launched into space. It continued to function for 3 years.
  • The Founding of N.A.S.A

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is the agency of the United States government that is responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research.

Pioneer 1 was launched on October 11, 1958. It reached a height of 70,700 miles.
  • Pioneer 4

Pioneer 4 was launched on a Earth-Moon trajectory. It passed within 37,000 miles of the Moon before falling into a solar orbit.
  • Mercury 7

The "Mercury Seven" astronauts were selected by NASA. As the pilot of Mercury 7, John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth. He became a national hero and a symbol of American ambition.
  • Tiros 1

Tiros 1, the first successful weather satellite, was launchedinto space.
  • Discoverer XIV

The US launche Discoverer XIV. It was the first camera equipped spy satellite.
  • The First American in Space

Alan B. Shepard became the second person, and the first American, to travel into space in May of 1961.
  • Gus Grissom

Gus Grissom was launched on a sub-orbital flight. His Liberty-Bell capsule became lost when it fills with water and sunk after splashdown
  • The Gemini Project

Project Gemini was the second human spaceflight program of NASA, the civilian space agency of the United States government. Project Gemini was conducted between projects Mercury and Apollo, with ten manned flights occurring in 1965 and 1966.
  • John Glenn Orbits 3 Times

Cape Canaveral, Fl. Feb. 20 -- John H. Glenn Jr. orbited three times around the earth and landed safely to become the first American to make such a flight. The 40-year-old traveled about 81,000 miles in 4 hours 56 minutes before splashing into the Atlantic at 2:43 P.M. Eastern Standard Time.
  • Aurora 7

Scott Carpenter repeated John Glenn's flight aboard "Aurora 7".

  • Mariner 4

Mariner 4 returned close range images of Mars.
  • Surveyor 1

Surveyor 1 was the first lunar soft-lander in the unmanned Surveyor program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, United States). This lunar soft-lander gathered data about the lunar surface that would be needed for the manned Apollo Moon landings that began in 1969.
  • Lunar Orbiter 1

Lunar Orbiter 1 enters orbit around the Moon and takes the first picture of the Earth from that distance.
