JFK Speech
JFK's speech John F. Kennedy challenged the United States to reach the moon by the end of the decade. He and the American peoples were motivated by the Cold War. The Soviet Union had pulled ahead of the Americans in the ongoing Space Race with their 1957 launch of Sputnik. -
Apollo 1 -- fire during test
During a launch test, three astronauts were killed on the launch pad in a fire. -
Apollo 4 Launch -- first test of Saturn V rocket
Description of the Apollo 4 Mission .
This was an unmanned test of the Saturn V rocket. This wa te first flight test of the Saturn V Rocket that would eventually take men to the moon. It also tested the heat shield for the command sevice module. All mission goals were achieved. -
Apollo 5 Launch -- unmanned test
Description of Apollo 5
This was an unmanned test of the Apollo system. This mission tested the lunar module and its engines. They tested being able to restart the engnes and the structure of the lunar module. The mission was successful and confirmed that the lunar module systems would work. -
Apollo 6 Launch -- last unmanned test
Description of the Apollo 6 mission
This was the last unmanned Apollo Mission. the purpose of the misson was to test the structure of all of the apollo components, and the copatibiliy of the launch vehicle and the space pad. they also tested the mission's support operations including the recovery of the command module, which would have astronauts on boar in later flights. -
Apollo 7 launch -- 3 astronauts on flight
Apollo 7 was the first apollo mission with astronauts on boards. The astronauts were Schirra, Eisele, and Cunningham -
Apollo 8 Launch -- to the moon without landing
This was the first mission to orbit the moon. This mission also tested the communications system. They took pictures of the far side of the moon. They read from the book of genesis on christmas eve. -
Apollo 9 Launch -- test docking between command service module and lunar module
This was the first test of docking the command service module and the lunar module. The command service module is the part that orbits the moon while the lunar module lands on the moon. -
Apollo 10 Launch -- everything except landing
This was a test of the Apollo mission with everything except actually landing on the moon. The command service module and the lunar module separated, but the lunar module did not land on purpose. -
Apollo 11 Launch -- "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
Apollo 11 was the first apollo mission to land on the moon. Astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin were in the lunar module called Eagle. Astronaut Collins remained in the command module called columbia. The landing site was the Sea of Tranquility -
Apollo 12 Launch -- exploring the moon
An Apollo 12 astronaut visits the Surveyor (unmanned) spacecraft that had landed on the moon. -
Apollo 13 Launch -- explosion on board
timeline of Apollo 13 accidentThe famous line "Houston, we've had a problem" comes from this mission. There was an explosion and the mission had to return to Earth without landing on the moon. This was made into a movie. -
Apollo 14 Launch
The Apollo 14 mission had astronauts Shepard, Roosa and Mitchell. The command service module was named Kitty Hawk and the lunar module was named Antares. -
Apollo 15 Launch -- using a rover to explore the moon
Apollo 15 landed on Hadley Rille. It tested a large number of experiments that looked at lunar rocks, lunar dust and the magnetic sphere -
Apollo 16 Launch
The commander of this mission was John Young who is the only person to have piloted 4 different space craft: Gemini, Apollo Command Service Mondule, Lunar Module, and Space Shuttle. They also had a subsatellite which was released in to lunar orbit fromt he command service module. -
Apollo 17 Launch
This mission had astronaut Schmitt as the lunar module pilot. He was the only professional geologist to visit the moon. This was the last apollo moon landing and the last time a human set foot on the moon.
