The development of soccer

  • The start of Mob ball

    Vilages would play other teams with no rules apart from you had to put the pigs bladder into the net. There wasnt any rule on how many people was allowed on the field so the vilages took as many people as they could. players used to handball the ball outside the box and throw the ball to other players.
  • Mob ball handling

    Due to the amount of players handling the ball the soccer community didnt feel like they were getting the most from the game. So they made it offical that only goal keepers can handle the ball outside the box.
  • Move from agriculture

    Most people in the 19th century lived off what they grew. They had no big machinery so most of this work was manual. Most people had to provide for their family so they couldn’t have any hobbies. This work was dedicated by the seasons, there was little or no free time for workers to take part in leisure activities. During the industrial revolution people still worked long hours. Even when people changed their work hours they still didn’t have time for their activities.
  • Role of pe in schools

    Sport has developed as a result of what has happened in school PE.
    PE is a key element of national curriculum in schools today.
    PE lessons encourage the development of skills that are used in many sports and a great number of extracurricular activities are organised. One of the aims of the national curriculum is to get as many children as possible to participate actively in sport
  • Goalkeepers introduced into soccer

    This was introduced because there was too many people handling the football and if there is only one person able to handle the ball this made it a better game to watch and play
  • The crossbar is used instead of tape

    if the ball was hit with tape there was no rebound which wouldnt need to anymore chances. So with the crossbar it leads to much more opportunities to score. Uniform goal size this means every goals will be the same size making it fair.
  • First soccer match that lasted 90 minutes

    soccer matches could last for any duration so they changed the length to 90minutes so everyone would know how long the match lasted and gave each team a fair chance to prepare for 90minutes of football.
  • IFA/Admission into matches

    This was for clubs to raise money for facilities being used so they started to charge fans into matches.
  • Promontion and relegation is introduced

    This was set so teams can get cups and awards for winning their league. The award could be the team moving up to a higher division. for the teams that struggle they would be relegated and go down to teams that are the same level as them.
  • FIFA is formed

    This organisation is formed so that each team and players have equality. They have a list of rules that teams must obey and if they dont they will receive the neccessary punishment. Fifa were formed to oversee international competition.
  • 10yard rule introduced

    This rule was introduced for free kicks so that the player who was striking it had a fair chance of scoring instead of a player standing infront of him.
  • No handball allowed outside the box

    This was to prevent players from running the pitch with the ball in their hand. This meant goal keepers can only handle the ball in their own area.
  • Offside Rule introduced

    This rule was introduced so that defenders had a fair chance with attackers. This meant the forward must be coming towards the defender or in line with the defender. when the ball is played to him.
  • La Liga league has started

    This was the start of a top brand league in spain. This gave everyone in spain something they could attend weekly and would give fans of football something they always wanted in their nation.
  • The goal keeper must stay on the line for penaltys

    This rule was made so goal keepers couldnt come right infront of the ball when the penalty was being took. This gave a forward a better chance of scoring.
  • World Cup Starts

    This was one of the biggest developments in football. This was a tournament that invited countries to participate in this event. Only 13 teams arrived to the tournament.
  • Saturday half day

    This was a major development in sports. In the 19th century workers were gave time so they could get off work and participate in sports. Workers had poor living conditions and working conditions. Workers could have had other jobs after the Saturday half day, this could be manual work around the gardens or for other people. This slowed down the development of sport.
    Factory owners realised that a happy workforce would be more effective so they encouraged the development of sports club.
  • Live televised matches

    This was a massive event in football because this meant fans could watch their favourite team at home instead of having to go to the game. This showed a wider range of audience their favourite teams and gave people from different countries a opportunity to watch their teams.
  • Shirt Numbers

    This was brought in by clubs so fans could recognise players by just looking at the number.
  • Public transport and car ownership

    Transport systems improved and started to contribute to sports from 1950’s with the railway systems. This allowed large number of people to travel all around the country and helped to popularise sports such as football, rugby and cricket. This helped fans get to the game's and helped raise popularity in the sport.
  • White Ball introduced

    The white ball was introduced to football because it was very easy to see and players would be able to see it if they had to play at night.
  • Back pass rule is introduced

    This rule is introduced because of the amount of teams that would pass the ball back to goal keepers and waste time. This rule was to stop this because it was making the match less entertaining.
  • Barclays Premier league Starts

    This was a major development in football because this was given to sky sports to televise weekly. This was all the top english teams in one league fighting it out to find out who was the best. Throughout england this would of been the only thing people would talk about and would of raised popularity in the sport.
  • Bosman rule

    This rule allowed all players in the european union and not under contract to change their club.
  • Goal line technology

    This technology was brought in to make soccer matches fairer. This was to stop arguements and debate if the ball had passed the line. This was a huge step in football because it helps referee get the decisions right. This was brought in because Frank Lampard was not awarded a goal that was over the line which caused outrage. FIFA addressed this problem by introuducing goal line technology.
  • New offside rule introduced

    This rule was put in to give the defenders a better chance. if a player is offside and comes anywhere near the play then the whistle will be blew. This helps defenders because if a player was offside then he cant be apart of that attack until he gets back onside.
  • Sky sports deal + BT sport

    This deal was worth over 5billion and had a massive impact on sport because sky sports are now showing many more teams on their channel which has reached a larger audience of viewers.
