The Cuban Revolution

  • 26th of July movement

    This was the first uprising which caused the Cuban Revolution. In this uprising Fidel Castro led a group of around 160 rebels in an attack on the Moncada Barracks (Santiago De Cuba).
  • History Will Absolve me speech

    After a lot of criticism about the attacks on Santiago, Castro made a speech defending and justifying his actions.This speech was also in defense of himself due to the charges pressed against him after the attacks.
  • Castro is released from jail

    On this date, Fidel Castro, Raul Castro and other survivors from the 26th of July movement were released from prison after only serving 2 years out of a 15 year sentence.
  • Castro sets sail for Cuba

    Led by Fidel Castro, around 80 men including Raul Castro, Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos set sail for Cuba from Mexico on a yacht called Granma
  • The movement grows

    As the revolution progressed more members on the Cuban public began to support Castro.This got to the extent where college students mounting an unsuccessful attack on the presidential palace resulting in many deaths
  • Cuba is boycotted by the USA

  • Fidel Castro calls for a general revolt

  • The first of the Cuba-USA hijackings

    A Cuban aircraft on its way from Miami to Havana is hijacked by rebels but crashes. The hijackers tried to get the plane Sierra Cristal to deliver weapons to Raul Castros rebels. This was the first of many events like this
  • Revolution ends

    Batista was driven out of Havana and fled the country. Other cities such as Santa Clara and Santiago De Cuba were captured by rebel groups led by Raul Castro and Huber Matos.
  • Bay of Pigs invasion

    This invasion a failed military invasion by the CIA on Cuba. The military sent on this mission were anti-Castro Cuban exiles. The aim of this mission was to overthrow the Castro Government. Despite this, the invading force was dealt with in 3 days by Cuban armed forces
