The first crusade started when Pope Urban II called for help against the Turks. He also called for help to free the free the city of Jerusalem. The crusaders gathered in Constantinople in the fall of 1096. They proceeded to siege Nicaea and later defeat an army led by Kilij Arslan. Afterwards, they also seized Edessa and Antioch. They eventually managed to capture Jerusalem on July 15,1099. Eventually more armies were dispatched for Jerusalem in 1100-1101, these armies were all defeated in Asia -

The King dies of dysentery, and leadership is handed over to his son, Charles. Charles was reluctant to go to war, and negotiated peace terms with Tunisia in exchange for free passage back to France. This marked the end of the Eighth Crusade.
