History of Education

  • The Colonial Period (1607-1775)

    -The lower classes and minorities were usually not educated, and they usually participated in an apprentice or on the job training under the tutelage of an experienced practitioner. (Usually lasts 3-7 years)
    -Upper class boys tutored until they were ready for boarding school or college.
    -Upper class girls tutored until they were ready to run a household and were already married.

  • The Early National Period (1775-1820)

    -There were establishments of academies in secondary schools that taught both Latin/ English grammar, along with other subjects.
    -Dewitt Clinton helped establish free schools, which played a significant role in enlarging the system of education.
    -The curriculum during this time period was based on religion the main goal when sending children was to enable them to become devoted and religious people

  • The Common School Movement (1820-1865)

    -The effort to fund schools in every community with public dollars.
    -The Puritans who established the New England colonies displayed a special eagerness to provide for education and literacy even though bulwarks against religious and cultural decline.
    -Schools essentially served private purposes and educational attainment reflected to the religious, racial, class, and gender differences in society.

  • The Education of Cultural Minorities

    -In 1870, less than 10 percent of southern Blacks from 5-20 had been enrolled in school.
    -In May of 1954, decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court consolidating cases in some states ruled the "separate but equal" doctrine which had been used to exclude colored children from public schools that was maintained for white children was unconstitutional.
    -The 1954 decisions meant that the rigid separation of the races in schools was not legal.

  • The Evolution of American High School

    -Latin Grammer schools taught Latin and Greek to boys which helped prepare them for the ministry or career law.
    - Benjamin Franklin founded academies in reaction to the Latin Grammar schools and allowed it to be of religious orientation, open to boys and girls, and tuition-charging.
    -Free secondary schools were made to meet the needs of the boys who didn't plan to attend college.

  • The Modern Era

    -Primary education was not much considered.
    -The system of education was made to take the needs and requirements of individuals into consideration.
    -Now more than ever, students are going into good institutions which tend to have good marketing, advertising strategies, and opportunities for everyone.
