    The “fall” of mainland China to communism in 1949 led the United States to suspend diplomatic ties with the PRC for decades.Chinese Communists joined the Nationalist Army in the Northern Expedition of 1926–27 to rid the nation of the warlords that prevented the formation of a strong central government. This lasted until the “White Terror” of 1927, when the Nationalists turned on the Communists, killing them or purging them from the party.

    Sino soviet Treaty of friendship of 1950
    On 14 February 1950, the two sides signed the "Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Alliance and mutual Assistance" and other agreements. The Foreign Ministers of the two countries exchanged three notes, declaring the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Alliance in China on 14 August 1945.

    The Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel; this was the first military action of the Cold War.This was a war against the forces of international communism itself.American officials worked anxiously to create some sort of armistice with the North Koreans. The Koren war came to an end in july of 1953.

    The Great Leap Forward was Mao’s attempt to modernize China’s economy. This was so by 1988 China would have an economy that rivaled America. Mao had toured China and concluded that the Chinese people were capable of anything. The two primary tasks that he felt they should target was industry and agriculture.Basically this was China’s leap into a better economy.

    the Communist government held massive artillery, and threatened invasion. The American response included a large naval contingent in the Taiwan Straits. The defenders of the islands were supplied by ships, and escorted by US naval vessels. American officials, including President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Dulles; they publicly affirmed the US commitment to defend Taiwan and to counter naval threats in the Taiwan Straits.

    In 1959 after Khrushchev opened talks with the USA in pursuit of his policy of “peaceful coexistence”. In 1960, Khrushchev withdrew Soviet technical advisers from China, and in 1961 launched a public polemic against China’s ally Albania. In 1962, the dispute erupted into mutual abuse and hostile military actions and most significantly, splits in almost all the Communist Parties across the capitalist world.
  • 1972 Nixon visit to China

    1972 Nixon visit to China
    This was an important event because the U.S. was seeking to improve relations with a Communist country during the Cold War. On his visit to China, Nixon met with Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. The two leaders agreed to expand cultural contacts between their two nations. Nixon also established plans for a permanent U.S. trade mission in China.

    Open Door Policy
    Deng realized that China needed Western technology and investment, and opened the door to foreign businesses who wanted to set up in China. As a first step, four special economic zones were authorized in southern China with tax incentives to attract foreign capital and businesses.
