    Quebec Padlock Law
    This law was indroduced in 1937, and was engineered to protect Quebec from any and all propoganda. It gave authorities the abilities to shut down any meetings that were even suspected of promoting communism, and gave the attorney general the ability to prosecute anybodyone who was heard to harbour communist beliefs.
  • The Gouzenko Affair

    The Gouzenko Affair
    Igor Gouzenko defected to Canada from the the Soviet embassy in Ottawa on September 5th, 1945. When he defected he brought with him intellegence documents incriminating dozens of Soviet spies. By doing so he revealed Stalin's plans to steal nuclear launch codes from Canada.

    The Berlin Blockade (10m)The Soviet Union broke it's agreement with the the Allie's and attempted to sieze West Berlin by forming a blockade around the city. I successfuly blocked all incoming t supply lines for a time, but was stopped when the United States started to airlift supplies in. by using a blockade.

    NATO: A HistoryNATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was the arch-angel to the Soviet's Warsaw pact. Canada was one of the founding members. The treaty's prime purpose was for all member nations to stand united and protect each other against any sort of communist threat.
  • "The Forgotten War" (The Korean War)

    "The Forgotten War" (The Korean War)
    Communist North Korea, aided by China, invaded South Korea in 1950. Because of America's policy on Communism, it supported South Korea. The United Nations got involved, and told member nations to help the SOuth as much as they could. This led to Canada contributing 25,000 soldiers to the war effort, 406 of which were killed and a total of over a thousand were wounded before the truce of 1953. The soldiers stayed until 1956.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik mania"Sputnik" was a satalite launched by the Soviets in the late 1950's. What made Sputnik such a large concern to othe governments was the rockets that launched it into orbit. These rockets also had the capabilties to send a nuclear warhead halfway across the globe, which was a large concern during the Cold War. This prompted the creation of ICBMs from the american government, and pushed Canada and North America on a whole to sprint into the 'space race'.
  • Lester B. Pearson & the Suez Crisis

    Lester B. Pearson & the Suez Crisis
    The Suez CrisisLester B. Pearson, Canada's secetary of state for external affairs, won the Nobel peace prize for resolving the Suez crisis in 1957. The Suez crisis was a political/military skirmish born when Egyptian general Nasser seized the Suez canal from the clutches of the British & French. The British & French responded by taking the Canal back by force, with aid from the Israeli military.

    The North American Areospace Defense Command, or NORAD, was created in 1958 by the Canadian & AMerican governments as a form of contenential defense agaisnt Soviet air threats, nuclear or otherwise. The Defensive Early Warning system was a similar air defense system, that was stationed in Alaska and Northern Canada. It was a string of Radar stations that would signal any form of air attack from the Soviets.

    The AVro ArrowThe Avro Arrow was set to be the most technologically advanced Canadian fighter jets of it's time, but was unfortunatley cancelled by Canadian Prime Minister John Deifenbacker due to it's immense cost. When the project was lost, it took with it over 14,000 jobs.
  • Diefenbaker, Bomarc missiles and nuclear warheads in Canada

    Diefenbaker, Bomarc missiles and nuclear warheads in Canada
    When the Prime Minister scraped the Avro Arrow the previous year, he also decided to buy American mader Bomarc missiles for Canada's defense. Nuclear warheads were also prohibited in Canada under Diefenbacker.

    After it was discovered that Soviet Missile sites were being constructed in Cuba, not a few miles outside of mainland America, there was a 14 day period of extreemely high tension between the two sides as Kennedy constructed a naval blockade against Cuba. P.M. Deifenbacker aided Kennedy in his quest for North American security.

    Young Americans flocked to Canada in the thousands throughout the Vietnam War, hoping to escape the mandatory military service demanded of them by the United States.
  • Soviet-Canadian Hockey Series

    Soviet-Canadian Hockey Series
    In 1972 the Canadians won the hockey series between the two nations, Canada & the Soviet Union, because of Paul Henderson's last minute goal. It was a symbolic victory of the Cold War and was a great source of Canadian pride.

    In the summer of 1987, the President of the United States at the time,Ronald Reagan, gave a speech at the wall. In his speech he demanded it e torn down. And thats exactly what happened on October 3rd, as the citezins of Berlin tore down the Wall from both sides, destroying it after 30 years.
  • The Fall of the Soviet Union

    Fall of the SovietsBy the end of 1991, the Soviet Union has completely crumbled. It's economy was weak beyond measure, and it had darastically overspent on its military. The political situation imploded and the people revolted. The communist party was barred, and with no further reason to continue political war on the West, it ended the Cold War.
