    The United States and Great Britain believed that the liberated nations of Eastern Europe should freely determine their own governments. Stalin feared that the Eastern European nations would be anti-Soviet if they allowed free elections. A civil war in Greece between the Communist People's Liberation Army and anti communist forces to determine who will get control over Greece. Great Britain supported the anti communist but they had their own problems which caused it to withdraw from Greece.
  • The Truman Doctrine

    United States President Harry S. Truman created the Truman Doctrine because of the British withdraw and the possibility of Soviet/Communist expansion into the Eastern Mediterranean. The Truman Doctrine said that the United States would provide money to countries threatened by communist expansion. If the Soviets were not stopped, the United States would have to face the spread of communism throughout the world.
  • Rise of the Soviet Union

    The Soviet Union suffered heavy loss but they were able to rebuild and expand their domain to other European countries. The Soviet Union decided to divide Germany into four zones. Each zone would be occupied by a major power in the war—the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union.
  • Crusade against Communism

    Joseph McCarthy began his crusade against Communism with a speech in Wheeling, West Virginia. Denouncin Communism on moral and religious reasons rather than on political or economic ones, he claimed that he had a list of 205 people in the State Department who were members of the American Communist Party.     The Cold War spread to Asia in 1950 which was the year the Soviet Union formed an alliance with China. North Korea attacked South Korea and started the Korean War. The United States assisted South Korea by helping to establish the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization and providing neutral Asian countries with military support.

    President Harry Truman announced on May 8, 1950, that the United States would give military and economic aid to the French in the Indochina struggle. U.S. was paying for one-third of the French effort in Indochina. It supplied the French with arms and materiel, and two hundred air force technicians.

    The Soviet Union had initially pledged to withdraw its troops from Hungary, Khrushchev reversed this decision and decided to crush the revolution. On November 4, he sent a large contingent of Soviet troops into Budapest. Hungarian resistance continued, but the small militia forces were no match for the Soviet military.     The Berlin Wall was built by an East German state. In 1957, fleeing to the West of the wall became a crime punishable with a prison sentence.
