The Yalta Conference
After the war, the Yalta Conference was set up between the Big Three (FDR, Churchill, and Stalin) to discuss an agreement to governing Germany jointly. This event fits in the GASPIRE theme of INTELLECTUAL because this shows how the nations came together to solve a problem. This event would soon contribute to high tensions between the nations of the world. -
The Truman Doctrine
As the spread of Communism was making its way throughout Europe, President Truman of the US made the Truman Doctrine that would aid any European nation that is was facing a communist takeover. This event fits under the GASPIRE theme of SOCIAL because this shows that Truman wanted the European nations to maintain what they had and not be taken over or conquered by communism. This would lead to greater turmoil between USSR and the US. -
The Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was proposed by the Secretary of State, George Marshall, to aid European nations rebuild after WWII. $13 billion in U.S. aid was sent to Europe from 1948 to 1952. But Stalin of the USSR and Eastern Europe rejected this aid, so only Western Europe received aid from the US. This falls under the GASPIRE theme of ECONOMIC because the Marshall Plan was made to rebuild the European nations economically. This event would create turmoil between USSR and the US. -
Berlin Airlift
Organized by the US and Britain, they supplied food and fuel for anyone that was deprived or suppressed under communist rule in western Europe. Unfortunately after 200,00 flights, The Soviet Union lifts the blockade. This event falls under the GASPIRE theme of SOCIAL. Social because this event shows oppressed western Europe was under communist rule. This event also led to higher tensions between USSR and the Us. -
COMECON
Established in 1949 of January, this was the Soviet's response to the Marshall Plan The goal of COMECON was to aid all communist countries (mostly eastern Europe) so that they would not receive any money or aid from the US. This event falls under the GASPIRE theme of ECONOMIC because this shows the USSR giving aid to communist nations. This would lead to the paranoia and possible threat seen by the US. -
NATO
The National Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed in 1949 of April. This organization was formed of and by USA, Canada, Britain, France, and 8 other western European nations. The organization pledged to protect and aid one another if ever attacked by the communist nations. This event falls under the GASPIRE theme of INTELLECTUAL because this shows how a group of nations came together to solve future problems. This would later pose a threat to the USSR and their communsism. -
Korean War
On 1950 of June, the spread of communism, led by North Korea, tried to make its way to the south; they were aided by USSR and communist China forces. The U.N., led by the U.S. forces came to the aid of South Korea. Ending on 1953 of July, NATO successfully stopped the spread of communism throughout Korea. This event falls under the GASPIRE theme of GEOGRAPHY because this shows how divided Korea was at the time. This event would make the USSR and all other communist nations a threat to the US. -
Arms Race
The arms race began sometime during 1952 of July. This was the nuclear competition between the US and the Soviet Union. This was mostly due to the creation of the H bomb that was detonated by the US in 1952, then Russia following up and building and detonating their own H bomb in 1953. This event falls under the GASPIRE theme of POLITICAL because this shows the political power and might the US and the Soviet Union had on one another. This would lead to further competition between the two. -
Warsaw Pact
Established in 1955 of May, the Warsaw Pact was made up of Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and the Soviet Union. Similar to NATO, the Warsaw Pact was designed to set up a unified military under Soviet control. This event falls under the GASPIRE theme of Political because this shows the type of power and influence the Soviet Union and communism had over eastern Europe. This would lead to furture turmoil between the USSR and the US. -
Cuban Revolution
After the overthrow of a corrupt government in Cuba on Jan. 1st of 1959, Fidel Castro took government control over all major industries and installed a totalitarian communist regime with the support of the Soviet Union. This falls under the GASPIRE theme of POLITICAL because this shows influence and the political power of communism that took over Cuba; a country that is almost on the other side of Europe. This would lead to the US's involvement in trying to stop communism in Cuba. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
On April 17, 1961, 1400 Cuban exiles whom were all trained by the US was back into Cuba to start a revolt and try to overthrow Fidel Castro. Unfortunately, Fidel's army outnumbered the Cuban exiles and were badly beat; they surrendered in less then 24 hours. This fall under the GASPIRE theme of INTELLECTUAL because this shows that the US did not know the power of Fidel's army and power. This event would later cause Russia to give nuclear warheads to Cuba. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
In the summer of 1962, Russia sent nuclear warheads to Cuba after the Bay of Pigs Invasion. In response to this, US set up a blockade on Oct. 16, 1962. Kennedy demanded the removal of the nuclear warheads from Cuba. On Oct. 28, 1962, Khrushchev removed the missiles from Cuba. This falls under the GASPIRE theme of POLITICAL because this shows the power the US and the USSR had. This event would soon later bring about the end of the Soviet Union. -
The End of the Cold War
Bringing about the end of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall was torn down, the borders of Russia opened, and the Soviet Union dissolved. This falls under the GASPIRE theme of INTELLECTUAL because this shows how the two nations came to an agreement to end the stalemate between each other.
