    The Red Scare

    A period of time of widespread fear of communism, anarchism or other leftist ideologies in the United States, caused by the tensions of the Cold War. People were scared of nuclear war and the threat of Soviet spies. This led to the mistreatment of many people.

    The Korean War

    Fought between North Korea, communist and supported by the Soviet Union, and South Korea, capitalist and allied with the U.S. It was the result of Cold War tension between the two countries, which had each occupied part of Korea after World War II. Both proclaimed themselves as the sole governments of Korea. North Korean military forces invaded first, and fought against the South Korean army, UN and American forces. The war ended when the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed.

    The Space Race

    A competition between the Us and the Soviet Union, who wanted to achieve spaceflight, with origins in the competition over nuclear technology of the time. The winner is deeply debated, as the United States was the first to put a man on the moon, but the Soviet Union first sent a man an a satellite to space. Indeed it was ended by Neil Armstrong walking on the moon.
  • The Berlin Crisis

    The Berlin Crisis
    After Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev gave the United States six month to withdraw their forces from the city of Berlin, the Americans responded by mobilizing their armies. On the orders of East German leader Walter Ulbricht, a barbed wire fence was built separating east and west Berlin. Eventually, this wall became more and more secure to stop germans from leaving the east for the west.
  • The Cuban Missle Crisis

    The Cuban Missle Crisis
    When the U.S and U.S.S.R came closest to nuclear conflict. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev reached a deal with Cuban premier Fidel Castro to place Soviet missiles in Cuba to deter any invasions. When U.S. intelligence discovered these weapons which had the capability of bombing them, they made a blockade around Cuba. The Soviets took this as an act of aggression and attempted to pass the blockade. It was decided that the Soviet’s would remove the missiles from Cuba, and the crisis was over.

    The Vietnam War

    A war between communist North Vietnam and capitalist South Vietnam and the United States. Conflict in the region stretched back several decades, but communists forced taking power in the south marked the beginning. It was ended by the treaty signed at a Geneva Convention, which split Vietnam in two, much like South Korea.

    The Soviet-Afghanistan War

    Sought between Afghanistan rebels called the Mujahideen and the Soviet supported Afghanistan government. The fought for years, with the Soviet Union not accustomed to fighting in such an environment. It became and embarrassment to the United States when the war continued with little success until the Soviet Union signed a peace treaty to end the war.
