A spontaneous nationwide revolt against the communist government where the working class organized militias and battles in order to overthrow the government. -

It stated that the United States would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them from becoming under Soviet's control. -

A United States U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. -

An unsuccessful action by the CIA to invade southern Cuba in attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro and the Cuban government. -

North Vietnam wins the war in South Vietnam. The South Vietnam regime falls with the surrender of Saigon and the two countries are united under a Communist government. -

The loss of East Germany's power lead the people to tear down the wall as soon as possible, reuniting Germnay. -
End of USSR
With the increase in democracy and resistance of central control and many failed attempts at reform, the Soviet Union was going downhill and eventually ended the hostility between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
