    International politics- another supoer power arises. 20 million of its citizens were killed. Soviets emerged from WWII as the other super power. In WWII, US and the Soviet Union were allies. The Soviets used Eastern Europe as a buffer zone against Germany. They thought that after being invaded twice they should do this.

    Stalin is the Soviet leader. He closes off highway routes to deny western allies to get into west Berlin. However, Harry Truman doesn't wish to bow down to the Soviets. He tried to help out West Berliners by dropping off supplies. It wen on for more than 3 years. Ultimately, the Soviets realized that this was looked at as foolish. It made the Soviets look heartless.

    Slide 7Mutual defense organization. NATO was created to prevent the kind of scenario to prevent scenarios like WWI. If a country was attacked, ti would become a problem for all 12 of the original countries that joined together. The Warsaw Pact got together as a collective defense treaty among eight communist states of Central and Eastern Europe in existence during the Cold War.

    Joseph McCarthy (US Senator)- he bgean to make a claim- he had a list of the US state department that would ultimately bring down the US. He wanted to go after communists by getting rid of them. He operated with questionnable evidence. The communist threat was very real. Communists were known as "reds", hence the name. Techniclly the Second Red Scare started in the late 1940's.

It was strengthened over time. It was over 80 miles of fortifications. Germand lived under communism and died trying to escape.. Owners shot to kill. People tried to tunnel underneath, tried to use hot air balloons to get over the wall. They also tried to forge papers.

US&Soviets agreed that missiles would be removed in exchange as long as US didn't invade Cuba. US went to DEFCON-2. If the US never initially invaded Cuba, this could've been bigger.

    Richard Nixon won, ended the Vietnam War and improved US relations with USSR and China. Nixon also made a historic visit to the Soviet Union, meeting with their leader Leonid Brezhnev and signied the SALT I Treaty and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.

    Many of the Soviet soldiers were untested in battle and their gear was not designed for the harsh environment of Afghanistan.The United States provided the Mujahideen with Stinger missiles. These enabled them to shoot down Soviet helicopters.The United States supported the Afghanistan rebels in order to try and overthrow the communist government.
