Berlin Wall The Soviet Union demands that West Berlin gets put under East German control. After talks fail to reach a resolution, Khrushchev orders the construction of the Berlin Wall. Kennedy responds by sending U.S. troops to West Berlin. Tensions reach an all time high. -

Cuban Missile Crisis The Soviet Union begins building missile sites in Cuba. Tensions rise as Kennedy blockades Cuba. Eventually the Soviet Union withdraws when the U.S. agrees to remove it's own missile installations in Europe. -

Unfortunately the U.S. backed a South Vietnamese leader who was despised by the people for his policies. Richard Nixon travels to China to meet with Premier Zhou Enlai and Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong. Nixon's approaches international politics with a more open mind and eventually paves the way for diplomatic relations with China. -
Detente With the Soviet Union
Nixon reaching out to China caused Russia to react and offer a meeting with the President. The meeting paved for the way for SALT I and improved relations between the Soviet Union and the United States.
