Potsdam Conference
The Potsdam conference was held at Cecilienhof from July 17 to August 2 1945. Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and harry Truman gathered to decide the punishment for the Nazis. Other goals were to establish post war order and peace treaties. -
Soviet invasion of Manchuria
The Soviet Union declares war on japan and in three months invades Manchuria, this is called Soviet invasion of Manchuria. Later then they invaded southern Sakhalin. -

The United Nations was established on october 24, 1945. This was made after World War 2 to aviod another war like it. Representatives of 50 countries met at San Francisco to draw up the United Nations Charter. -

On November 29, 1947 the United Nations voted in favor of a partition plan to create the state of Israel. War broke out shortly after it was built between the Arabs and Jews. The 1948 Arab-Israeli war, established the state of Israel as an independent state. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall plan was the United States aid to Europe to help them rebuild economies and prevent communism from spreading after World War 1. This started on April 1948 and lasted four years. The goals were to modernize industries, to rebuild regions that were devastated by war, and make Europe strong again. -
Berlin Air Lift
The Soviet Union blocked the western allies’ road, railway, and canals accesses to enter berlin. Their plan was to gain practical power. The western ally’s air forces carried supplies to the people in West Berlin and was called the Berlin air lift. -
NATO
The north Atlantic treaty was signed on April 4, 1949. One of the reasons why NATO was build for was to respond to the threat posed by the Soviet Union. NATO was more of a political association until the Korean War. -

The Korean War was between South Korea and North Korea form 1950-1953. South Korea was aided by the united nations while North Korea was aided by China, North Korea established a communist government while South Korea established a right-wing government. -
Stalin's death
Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union for 29 years. He died of a severe heart attack on March 5, 1953. Stalin is remembered as a man who helped his country from Nazi control and a mass murderer. -

The PRC seized the Yijiangshan islands on May 1, 1954. This was a short armed conflict betwenn the ROC and PRC. The ROC abandoned the island. -

The Soviet Union and other communist countries signed a treaty called the warsaw pact. This ment that the Soviets were in comand of the armd forces. The Warwaw pact was called this because it was signed in Warsaw. -
Hungarian Revolution of 1956
This was a nation wide revolt against the government and the Soviet inmposed police. This was the first mjor threat to the USSR. This lasted form October 23 to November 10. -
The Suez Crisis
The Suez crisis started on October 29, 1956 when Israeli army pushed into Egypt toward the Suez Canal. The French and the British joined the Israelis, nearly brought the Soviet Union into the dispute. In the end the French, British, and Israelis withdrew their armies in 1956 and 1957. -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam War or also known as the second Indochina war started on December 1956 to April 30, 1973. It also occurred Laos and Cambodia. The United States withdrew on 1973. -

The Soviet Union made Sputnik 1 and was the first artificial earth satellite and was launched to orbit on October 4, 1957. Sputnik 2 was the second satellite to orbit earth on November 3, 1957. This is what started the space race. -

The Berlin wall was constructed in August 13, 1961 that cut off western berlin and surrounded eastern Germany. The wall was built by GDR and was referred to as the anti-fascist protection rampart. The Berlin wall was destroyed on November 9, 1989. -
