The Potsdam Conference
The Potsdam conference took place from July 17, 1945, to August 2, 1945. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill decided to meet in Potsdam to negotiate the terms for the ending of World War II, and how the should deal with Germany. -
V-J Day
Victory over Japan Day was the day that Japan surrendered, and thus ended World War II. There was an official surrender ceremony on September 2, 1945. -
The Iron Curtain
Winston Churchill gave a speech referring to the Soviet Union's expansionism and he stated that an iron curtain had descended across Eastern Europe. -

President Truman gave a speech establishing that the U.S would start to help out and provide politcal, military, and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat of forces. -

The Marshall Plan was made to help Europe's economy and rebuild it after World War II. George Marshall, the current secretary of state at that time proposed the idea of The Marshall Plan. -
The Creation of Israel
The leader of the Jewish agency, David Ben-Gurion announced the founding of the state of Israel. Great Britain was against having both a Jewish, and Arab state in Palestine. The U.S. backed resolution 181, but recommended a United Nations trusteeship that limited Jewish immigration and to divide Palestine into Jewish and Arab provinces. -
The Berlin Airlift
June 24, 1948 - May 12, 1949.
The Soviet Union setup blockades on the Western Allie's road, railway, and canals leading to areas of Berlin under Allied control. Because of the blockades the Western Aliies created The Berlin Airlift, which brought supplies to West Berlin. Eventually the blockade was lifted and Berlin was split into West and East Germany. -
Formation of NATO
NATO was a military alliance of collective defenses, members of NATO agreed to protect eachother if attacked by someone outside of NATO. -
Korean War
June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953
The Korean War was a civil war between North and South Korea that become international once the U.N. stepped in and supported South Korea, and the PRC supported North Korea. The war is still technically going on but there is a cease-fire agreement for now. -
The Death of Joseph Stalin
Joseph Stalin was the leader of The Soviet Union from the 1920's till his death. Stalin worked with Hitler, and formed the non-agression pact with Germany. -
Cuban Revolution

Fidel Castro led an armed revolt on Cuba and took over then replaced the government and made it a socialist state. -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw pact was a treaty between eight communist states in Europe during the Cold War. This pact was created to keep control over military forces throughout central and eastern Europe. -
Suez Crisis
The Israeli army pushed up into Egypt towards the Suez Canal. The British and French army also got involved with the push, and the Soviet Union almost joined the fight as well. -
Vietnam War
The U.S. got involved in the war because it was viewed as a way to stop communist takeover in South Vietnam. The U.S. army relied on air superiority to conduct operations. -
Sputnik I
Sputnik I was the first artificial Earth satellite. The success of Sputnik I surprised America and caused the Sputnik crisis and Space Race. Sputnik 1 allowed us to find out the upper atmosphere's density. -

Bay of Pigs Invasion
This was a failed invasion of Cuba by the CIA group Brigade 2506. The intent of this invasion was to overthrow Fidel Castro and the government. -

The Cuban MIssile Crisis
An American spy plane discovered nuclear missile sites in Cuba.
John F. Kennedy gave a speech about the crisis on October 22 and televised it across the nation. A naval blockade was placed around Cuba and they were requested to destroy the missiles and sites. The Soviets agreed on destroying the weapons in exchange for America to not invade Cuba. -
The Assassination of JFK
John F. Kennedy was assassinated at 12:30 p.m. by Lee Harvey Oswald. He was riding in a presidential motorcade when he was shot by a sniper rifle. -
Gulf of Tonkin Incident
The USS Maddox engaged 3 North Vietnamese torpedo boats and then fought a sea battle. Later in the fight four F-8 Crusaders strafed the North Vietnamese boats. Four North Vietnamese sailors died and six others were wounded. -
USS Pueblo Incident
North Korean naval forces attacked the USS Pueblo, also known as AGER-2. 82 crewmembers lived through the attack and were kept as prisoners in Korea for 11 months. -
UN Resolution 2758
Resolution 2758 ended the Republic of China's membership in the United Nations. This resolution also voided article 18, of the U.N. charter, which stated that changes to China's representation in the U.N. needed to be determined by a 2/3 vote. -
Nixon visits China
Nixon visiting China was to help normalize relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China. It was the first time an american president had visited the PRC, and it ended 25 years of separation between both sides. -

An angry group of Islamic revolutionaries overtook the U.S Embassy in Tehran. This group took more than 60 americans as hostage. -
U.S. & Soviet Boycotts of the Olympics
Jimmy Carter gave the Soviets an ultimatum that if they did not withdraw their troops from Afghanistan within a month that the U.S. would boycott the Olympics in Moscow. -
Korean Airline Flight 007
The airliner was taken down by Soviet aircraft, an SU-15. Every passenger on the plane was killed. The plane was heading to Seoul, and it flew off limits through Soviet airspace. -

This began when 7 american hostages were being held in Lebanon. It was an attempt to free the 7 hostages. Members of the Executive branch started selling weapons to Iran for the release of the hostages. -
The Chernobyl Disaster
The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear power plant accident, and it is considered the worst in history. 31 people died during the accident and many more suffer from cancer and deformities. This accident was classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale. -

Chinese troops went to Tiananmen Square in Beijing and opened fire on civilians who were protesting China's political leadership. -
