VE Day (Cultural)
Victory in Europe Day is when the Allies won WWII when the leader of the Nazis, Adolf Hitler, committed suicide causing Germany to surrender. The Allies were successful in this war for many reasons. One being the location of Germany and its allies. -
Allies Drift Apart (Political Action/Policy)
During WWII, the Soviet Union and other countries around the West were in good terms as they helped to defeat Nazi Germany together. The alliances set up conferences to discuss peace agreements. Eastern Europe and Germany caused separations between former allies. The differences of perspectives led to the Cold War. -
Communists in China (Political Action/Policy)
In 1949, Communists in China had triumphed. This was good news for the Soviet Union because they were allies at the time. This seemed that the United States would lose in the Cold "War". Unfortunately, in the 1950's, distrust created tensions between the two and causing the Soviet Union eliminating their alliance in 1960. -
Allies Drifiting Farther Apart (Militaristic Action/ Policy)
The United States, Canada, and ten other countries formed a military alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization basically saying they'd help each other if one was attacked. In 1955, the Soviet Union formed their own military alliance called the Warsaw Pact. This was done to form alliances between other countries and possibly be able to help defeat the opposing side of the Cold War. -
A Wall Divides Berlin (Science/Technology)
Berlin was a major focus during the Cold War. The city of Berlin was split into two, East Berlin and West Berlin. The East side was for people who supported communism and the West being for people who were unhappy with communism and were low-paid. The wall was built to prevent people from fleeing their side of Berlin. -
Oil Prices (Ecomonic Action/Policy)
A political crisis happened in the Middle East causing oil from being imported to the United States as well as other countries and also causing a reduction and causing oil prices to rise. This is important to the Cold War because the United States need oil to fuel their weapons for war. -
The Berlin Wall is Toppled (Cultural)
The Cold War was starting to get bigger and bigger by the minute. As this happened, East Berlin wanted to change the relations with West Berlin. They began to flee to West Berlin and joined connections once again.
