  • The Yalta Conference

    The Yalta Conference
    This meeting was held between the Allies; former American president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the then Soviet Leader, Stalin, and the British Prime minister, Winston Churchill. The Yalta Conference took place just before the start of the Cold War on February 4, 1945. The significance of the meeting was that its purpose was for the Allied Powers to discuss what would happen to Germany since it was post war time.
  • The Postdam Conference

    The Postdam Conference
    The Postdam Conference was when Allied leaders met up to talk about Communism on July 17, 1945. They also discussed the Soviet Union and its effects and tolls that it took on people during the post war timeframe. The leaders and officials also decided that they were going to talk about what the next step for dealing with Germany would be.
  • The Iron Curtain

    The Iron Curtain
    The Soviet Union created something known as the Iron Curtain on March 5, 1946. They implemented this barrier so that central and eastern parts of Europe would not have as easy access to the west or just other anti-communist areas.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    George C. Marshall, who was the former US Secretary of State, created the Marshall Plan on June 5, 1947. His dream was for the program to provide aid from America and to Europeans in order to fix their broken economy from World War ll. This plan was wanting to prevent any possibility of Soviet Communism from spreading any further than it already had.

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO
    On April 4, 1949, NATO was bounded by several countries. America, Greece, Western parts of Europe, Canada, and Turkey were all apart of NATO. These countries promised one another that they would protect each other and fight against any of the Eastern bloc countries or USSR.
  • The Chinese Civil War

    The Chinese Civil War was when the Communist Party of China and the Republic of the China fought. The war took place until May 1, 1950. Yet, the War started way back in the April of 1927. Eventually two different territories were created. One was called Republic of China and the other one was called peoples Republic of China. After fighting, each territory claimed that they were the actual government of China.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    On June 25, 1950, after Korea split into part of the land being communist and the other part being deemed democratic, war broke out. North Korean forces ended up crossing that was known as the 38th parallel, which was against international communism. This invasion would be later known as the very first action that was taken in the cold war. July 1953 was when the Korean War ended when officials signed the armistice agreement. The agreement lead to a demilitarized zone within Korea.
  • The Battle of Inchon

    The Battle of Inchon
    On September 15, 1950, the Battle of Inchon began. The United Nations won against Korea. This helped America forces as they took control of Seoul, South Korea’s capital.
  • The Geneva Accords

    The Geneva Accords
    Geneva Accords was a settlement that took place on April 26, 1954. It finally ended the Indochina war. It also ended the beef between Vietnam and France. It created Southern Vietnam and Northern Vietnam.

    The Vietnam war began on November 1, 1954. Communist north Vietnamese forces, south Vietnam, Soviet Union, and China were all allied forces. They fought against anti-communist countries and forces. These anti-communist forces included South Vietnam, the North Vietnamese army, and the United States.

    The Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw Pact took place on the fourteenth of May in 1955. Both Eastern Europe and USSR signed to pact. Signing the document meant that they would come together only to fend against NATO.
  • The Hungarian Uprising

    On October 23, 1956, there was a Hungarian uprising. This was a revolt focused towards hungry Soviet politics. They protested a total of 16 points that they wanted to bring attention to their government.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik was created on October 4, 1957 by the Soviet Union. This was a monumental creation. This was an important steppingstone in history because it was the very first satellite that was sent into space.
  • The U-2 Spy Plane

    The U-2 Spy Plane
    The U-2 spy plane was a United States invention. It was created on May first in 1960. Eventually, the project was a major embarrassment since it was shot down hovering the Soviet Union. Its demise led to a further downward spiral for the Soviet Union’s relationship with America.
  • The Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs was an incident that took place on April seventeenth of 1961. After several drawbacks and setbacks dealing with industries such as the oil industry and the sugar industry in Cuba, former president Kennedy eventually decided to invade Cuba in 1961. The US failed to take control of the Communist government that was under the leadership of Fidel Castro.

    The Berlin Wall
    The Berlin Wall was a structure that divided West Berlin from East Germany. The wall was constructed on the thirteenth of August in 1961. It was a symbol for the division that took place between Communism and Democracy.
  • The Cuban Missile Crises

    The Cuban Missile Crises took place around October 1962. The Soviet Union, America, and Cuba made up the group of enemies involved. Cuba received missiles from the Soviet Union. This can be argued as the most stressful time periods within the Cold War because at the time it was uncertain about what world leaders would do or if they would strike.

    JFK’s Berlin Wall Speech happened on June 26, 1963. The former president wanted to have people understand that he supported West Germany. West Berlin citizens considered the speech to be extremely motivational for them to continue their fight against east Germany.
  • The Gulf of Token Incident

    The Gulf of Token Incident took place on August 2 of 1964. Basically torpedo boats came after the USS Maddox. The attack was from north Vietnamese individuals. This attack led Johnson to be able to finally deploy armed forces in warfare against North Vietnam.

    Detente took place in 1972. Richard Nixon is the one that began to follow it. Apparently it was in the hopes of defeating the Soviet Union, but in a more relaxed way. Unfortunately, this plan did not pan out.
  • Nixon Visited China

    Nixon Visited China on February 21, 1972. This meeting was monumental for their relationship. This meeting eventually led China and the United States of America to join forces in order to defeat a common enemy, the Soviet Union.
  • SALT 1

    SALT 1
    SALT 1 took place on May 26, 1972. Brezhnev and Nixon agreed to it. It was the agreement that manufacturing of nuclear missiles would be prohibited to reduce nuclear war threats.
  • SDI/Star Wars

    SDI/Star Wars
    SDI/Star Wars was launched on March 23, 1983. SDI is short for the Strategic Defense Initiative. It has the nickname of Star Wars. President Ronald Reagan implemented the strategy. The purpose of this device was to help defend and protect America from any possible missiles and or attacks from places such as the Soviet Union.

    Former President Reagan had a Berlin wall speech on June 12, 1987. He urged the people, basically anybody that was listening, to destroy the wall. He wanted people to receive more freedom, but in order to do so they would have to destroy the wall.

    The Fall of the Berlin Wall took place on November 9, 1989. The wall did not last long at all. The Communist bloc was known to be a bit of a weaker force. East Germany had eventually discussed how people were able to relocate at certain points in the wall.
