Quebec's Padlock Law
Padlock law- The Quebec government made the law to Protect the Province from Communist Propaganda.
- The idea of the Padlock Law came from the Criminal Code that was introduced after the Winnipeg General Strike in 1919.
- The law was officially passed by the government on March 24th 1937
- this Law was significant because it stopped freedom of speech to Canadian Citizens

Gouzenko Affair
Gouzenko Affair
- September 5th 1945 Igor Gouzenko left the Soviet embassy in Ottawa carrying secret documents.
- Gouzenko approached the Ottawa Journal and the Minister of Justice and tried to give the documents to them, so they could be published.
- The documents had information about the existence of the Soviet spy network operating inside several government departments in Canada and in the British High Commission in Ottawa.- The Gouzenko affair impacted the Canadian public opinion. -
Berlin Blockade
Berlin Airlift- One of the first major international crises of the Cold War.
- The Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Allied control
- The Berlin Blockade was an attempt by the Soviet Union to limit the ability of France, Great Britain and the United States to reach their sectors of Berlin. -
International Alliences: NATO and Warsaw Pact
- NATO is a defence act used to protect memebers against Soviet aggression.
- 12 founding memebrs of NATO are Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Uited States.
- The Warsaw Pact included Albainia, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Soviet Union.
- The Soviet Union created the Warsaw Pact incase fo a NATO attack.

The Korean War
Korean War
- Canada was on the side of the United Nations during the Korean War
- In 1950 North Korea decided to attack South Korea.
- Only 16 aided the war effort in Korea out of all the member nations.
- Canada was ranked 3rd.
- Over 1000 Canadian were wounded and 406 died.
- UN ensures the independence of South Korea and Canadian troops stayed in Korea until 1953 to maintain the truce. -
Diefenbaker, Bomarc missiles and nuclear warheads in Canada
Cold War BOMARC nuclear surface - The North American Air Defence Agreement (NORAD) deployed 56 American-made Bomarc missiles in Ontario and Quebec.
- Diefenbaker was the 13th prime minister of Canada -
UN peacekeeping: The Suez Crisis
Suez Crisis - The suez crisis had the potential to escalate into a third world war.
- The Egyptians were denied funds from the Us, Britain and the World Bank to build a dam with the Soviet Union
- the Egyptian government proposed to use canal tolls to pay for the dam because they werent gettign funds
- Britain, France and Isreal planned to attack Egypt because they believed the transportation of Arabian oil and Asian goods would be stopped. -
Continental Alliances: NORAD and DEW line
NORAD and Dew line- Canada and the US foreed a new organization on August 1st, 1957 - The organization is called North American Air Defence Agreement.
- Dew line is a system of radar stations in the far northern Arctic region of Canada
- It was created o detect incoming Soviet bombers during the Cold War,
- provided early warning of any sea-and-land invasion. -
Sputnik and Canada's Space program.
Sputnik- Soviets launched the first sputnik sattelite into space in 1957.
- The sattelite orbitted the earth and could be used to deliver nuclear war head.
- Eventually they made enough warheads to blow up the planet. -
Pearson wins Nobel Prize
- Lester B. Pearson won the nobel prize for resolving the suez crisis through the UN

Avro Arrow and it's Cancellation
Avro Arrow- Avro Arrow made its very first flight test on March 25th 1958
- The highest speed was three times the speed of sound and it travelled at an altitude of 60,000 feet.
- The main reason the Avro was cancelled because it was too expensive and was not worth the money. -
The Cuban Miissile Crisis
- A naval blockade surrounded the islanf to stop Soviets from delivering missiles.
- Many people believed that the misslle would be launched in a major city in the United States.
- USSR was installing ballistic missiles in Cuba that would hit US and Canada

- On December of 1991 the Soviet Union disintegrated into fifteen separate countries. -

- The Berlin wall was a division between West Berlin and East Germany.
- It was also the boundry between communism and democracy during the Cold War.
- After the Soviet Union fell the wall was demolished.
