    The First Use of The Atomic Bomb
    The first Atomic Bomb was used August 6th, 1945 when the United States tested on the city of Hiroshima in Japan. The bombed weighed five pounds. It is significant because it was the first time an Atomic Bomb had been used.
  • Gouzenko Affair

    Gouzenko Affair
    Igor Gouzenko stole a number of secret documents one night from a Soviet embassy in Ottawa. He contacted The Ottawa Journal and The Minister of Justice, Louis St Laurent but was turned away both times. As a last resort Igor sought the help of his neighbours, one of who alerted police. When they got word of what was happening officials from the Soviet embassy broke into Igor's apartment but once the police got there a heated discussion arose that ended in the Soviets leaving empty handed.

    Formation of the United Nations
    The United Nations is an organization that is dedicated to keeping world peace, similar to the League of Nations except it has "Peace Keepers" to enforce their rules. It has 50 countries involved including Canada.

    The Formation of NATO
    NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was created to protect member countries form an attack by the USSR and every member made a pledge to defend one another if such attack occurred. It is significant because it protected us against a potential attack from the Soviets and it causes them to create their own organization called The Warsaw Pact Alliance.

    Sometime after the formation of NATO The Soviet Union formed the Warsaw Pact alliance in response.
  • The Formation of NORAD

    The Formation of NORAD
    In the mid-50's the US and Canada came together to create an organization called NORAD ( North American Air Defence Agreement). It's purpose was to defend North America from possible Soviet Union attacks, they built three lines of radar to provide and early warning of an attack to do this.

  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The conflict that started the Korean War was North Korea wanting South Korea to become a communist nation. Communists fought against the UN for 3 years but the UN played referee between them until a peace treaty was signed and both Nations returned to their old forms. This resulted in the UN reaching their goal of stopping the spread of communism.

    The Vietnam War took place from 1954-75. This war was between North Vietnam and its allies in South Vietnam, who wanted a communist government, against the government of South Vietnam and their principal allies the US, who wanted a democratic government.

  • Suez Crisis

    Suez Crisis
    Lester Pearson, Canada’s Minister of External Affairs, saw that this conflict was about to escalate into a major war so he proposed defusing the situations by sending in a peacekeeping force run by member nations of the UN. The UN supported the idea and within a couple weeks Canadians arrived at the Canal. Our troops stayed there until 1967. The Suez Crisis marked the beginning of Canada’s involvement in UN peacekeeping missions.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    In 1958 Fidel Castro overthrew the US friendly government in Cuba causing the US to lose their "playground". The US backed up an anti-Castro Cuban invasion in 1961 but they were unsuccessful. This encouraged Cuba to turn to the USSR for support. Then in the October of 1962 American surveillance planes took photographs showing that the USSR was installing a missile base in Cuba.

    The Cancellation of the Avro Arrow
    The Avro Arrow was a bomber plane developed by A.V. Roe of Canada. It was the fastest and most advanced plane of it's time and was designed to carry nuclear-tipped missiles that could destroy Soviet bomb attacks over the Canada. It was cancelled in February of 1959 when Bomarc missiles were invented.

    The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks or SALT were two rounds of conferences and corresponding international treaties involving the United States and the Soviet Union concerned about armament control. The agreements were signed by both the US and the Soviet Union. These agreements were meant to restrain the arms race with nuclear weapons.

    The Strategic Defense Initiative was a was a missile defence system that had the ability to protect America from attacks by using nuclear weapons. The system was first publicly announced by President Ronald Reagan on March 23, 1983.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    East Germany's government and the Soviet Union decided that they wanted to push the US, France, and Britain out for good. The Russians built the wall until 1989 when the German Government said everyone can pass through it. This event signifies the decline of the Cold War because they no longer see it as a threat to let people pass through the wall.

    The Breaking up of the Soviet Union
    On Christmas Day 1991 was the last time the Soviet flag flew over Kremlin in Moscow. Eleven Soviet Union republics met in Kazakh the city of Alma-Ata and announced that they would no longer be part of the Soviet Union instead they declared a Commonwealth of Independent States. This left Georgia as the last of the republics.
