The Berlin Blockade

This is the first major ineternational crisis during the Cold War. There was a wall built around West Germany that cut off the major supply routes and the country was not able to feed itself. -
Berlin Airlifts
Berlin Arilift (Slide 6).
This event went on for about 300 days and was a response to the blockade set up that blocked resources to the West Germans. This was significant becasue it made the Soviet Union look bad when the US planes flew over dropping supplies and pictures got out of kids and family's cheering. -
The Second Red Scare
The Second Red Scare (slide 9)This occured during President McCarthy's time in office and came about because people were scared of communism taking over. It came about because he started and anti communist cruisade by stating in speaches that he had lists of "card holding communists" in our government. -

The Korean War came about when North Korea invaded South Korea and put them under an opressive rule. The were a couple countries that jumped in to help push them back to the boarder along with America but overall this is one of the least talked about wars in American history. -

The Soviet Union put two satalites into space with the use of rockets which created the potential for space weapons. This created a huge scare for the American people until President Nixon takes office and we gain the lead back when we put a man on the moon. -
The Bay Of Pigs is one of America's biggest falures
The Bay Of Pigs (slide 14)
This was the plan that Kennedy took into action to take Cuban exiles who were agenst communism and plant them back in Cuba to start gaining intel and a gorilla army. The US tried to claim no involvement when it failed off the bat but the media quickly found out that the US had fully backed this operation. -
The Berlin wall is built isolating East Germany

This was a wall that completely issolated West Germany where they were starved and forced to work. Many people tried to escape to the other side of the wall and into East Germany but were gunned down on cite. This was a major controversy throught the war and became a symbol of the oppression of West Germany. -
The Cuban Missile Crisis the effect on America
The Cuban Missile Crisis (slide 17)This is when the leader of Cuba finnaly agreed to have the Soviet Union set up nuclear missiles on the island. This caused great fear for the US because we were easily in range with almost all of our major cities including our capitol. -
President Nixon Visits China to improve Economic ties
President Nixon goes to China
This was a very big event during the cold war because the US had not been to the Republic of China since it was established in 1949. This was also a major event because it had been the first major move to keep friendly ties with a communist country. This also lead to the establishment of the "Open Door Policy" that allowed anyone to trade with China. -
South Vietnam falls to Communist forces
The US sends no support as South Vietnam fallsThis is a major event because it Nixon had promised to send aid if this had ever happened but the US did nothing. Ford was the President at this time and was trying to convice Congress to make good on Nixon's promise but they did not. -
The US invades Grenada
This invasion of an island that had been in the control of a military coup for 4 years was taken back by the United States. The US then helped rebuilt the constituional government that was formerly in control. -
The Demolition of the Berlin Wall begins
The Fall of the Berlin WallThis is a mojor sybol of the cold war and all the fighting that is occuring during the 45 or so years and the demolition of this major icon bring about the end of the war. When the wall is torn down Germany is quickly reunited and peace returns.
