Iron Curtain Descends on Europe
Symbolized the ideological conflict and phsical boundry diving Europe into two separate areas, from the end of WWII in 1945, til the end of the Cold War in 1991. On the east side of the Iron Curtain, were the countries that were connected to or influenced by the Soviet Union. States developed their own international economic and military alliances. -
Potsdam Conference
Held at the Cecilienhof, in Potsdam. Countries that were involved were the Soviet Union, the U.S, and the United Kingdom. The three of them were represented by Communist Party General Secretary Joseph Stalin. -
Formation of The United Nations.
An intergovernmental organization established to advocate international co-operation. -
Truman Doctrine
International relations policy set forth by the U.S. President Harry Truman. It stated that the U.S. would help Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to stop them from falling into the Soviet sphere. -
Marshall Plan
Was the American initiative to aid Europe, when the United States gave economic support to help rebuild European economies after World War II in order to prevent the spread of Soviet Communism. Beginning in April of 1948, the plan was in operation for about 4 years. The U.S's goals were to rebuild places that were effected by the war, to remove trade barriers, modernize industry, and to make restore Europe. -
Creation of Israel
Head of the Jewish Agency, David Ben-Gurion, announced the formation of the state of Israel. On the same day, U.S. President Harry S. Truman acknowledged the new nation on the same day. It is a Jewish national home. it would be for Jewish and Arabs. -
Berlin Air Lift.
Soviets tried to push west out of Berlin, countered this move by requiring that all Western convoys headed to Berlin travelling through Soviet Germany be sereach. Trizone Government saw this as a threat and refused the right of the Soviets to search their consignment. Soviets then cut all surface traffic to West Berlin. Eventually Berlin, faced with starvation and in need of essential supplies. Blockade of Berlin was lifted by Soviets on May 12, 1949. -
Formation of NATO
is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty. The organization establishes a system of collective defence by which its member states negotiate to mutual defense in reaction to an attack by any external part. -
Korean War.
Was a war between South Korea and North Korea. Was basically the result of the political division of Korea by an agreement of the successful allies at the conclusion of the Pacific Wat at the end of World War II. It ended July 27th,1953. -
Joseph Stalin Dies.
Stalin's health progressively got worse towrds the end of WWII. He suffered from atherosclerosis from his heavy smoking. He also suffered from a mild stroke, and a severe heart attack in October of 1945. On march 4th, his illness was brocasted in the media with suprising details such as pulse, blood pressure and urinalysis. He died at the age of 74. -
Warsaw Pact formed
was a collective defense treaty among eight communist states in the states of Centeral and Eastern Europe in the exsistence duing the cold war. It was disestablished on July 1st, 1991 -
Sputnik I & Sputnik II
Sputnik was a 58cm diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to brocast radio pulses. It's launch date was Oct. 4th, 1956. Sputnik 2 was a 13 foot high cone-shaped capsule. it accomodated several compartments for a telemetry system, a regeneration, a programming unit, radio transmitters, and a temperature control system for the cabin. it was launced Nov. 3rd, 1957. -
Suez Crisis
Also referred to as the Tripartite Aggression, Suez Canal Crisis, Suez War, or Second Arab-Israeli War, was a diplomatic and military conflict in late 1956 between Egytp,on one side, and Britain, France, and Isreal, on the other, With the United Nations, U.S. and Soviet Union playing big roles into forcing Frace, Britain, and Isreal to withdraw. It Ended Nov. 7th, 1956 -
Vietnam War.
Was a Cold War-era proxy war. Followed the First Indochina War and was fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The U.S. government observed American involvment in the war as a wat to stop communist takeover of South Vietnam. It ended April 30th, 1975 -
Nasa is Formed
Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, creating NASA. Operations began Oct. 1st, 1958, also absorded the 46-year-old NACA intact. had over 8,000 employees, an annual budget of US$100 million, two small test facilities, and three major research laboratories. In December 1958, Nasa had gained control of the Jet Propulsion Labortory. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion.
Was a failed military invasion of Cuba handled by the CIA-sponsered paramilitary group Brigade 2506. -
Berlin Wall Construction
The German Democratic Republic created a barrier, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. All that was included were guard towers, that were placed along large concrete walls. Eastern Bloc had claimed that the barrier was created to protect the population from fascist elements. The wall was completed on Nov. 9 1989 -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Also known as the October Crisis or The Missile Scare, was a 13-day conflict in October 1962 between the Soviet Union and Cuba on a side, and The U.S. on the other. it is usually considered as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to turining into a Nuclear Conflict. -
Kennedy is Assassinated.
J.F.K. was fatally shot by a sniper while travelling with his wife. He was Assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. -
USS Pueblo Incident
Navy Ship that was boarded and captured by North Korean forces because Pueblo was on North Korean waters. North Korea attempted attack as Pueblo rose the U.S flag. This made North Korea feel "threatened" and they told Pueblo to stand down or they would begin firing at them. -
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
An international treaty whose intention is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapon technology. Encourage cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. -
UN resolution 2758
It was passed in response to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1667 that needed any change in China's representation in the UN be determined by a two-thirds vote referring to Article 18 of the UN Charter. -
Nixon's visit to China
This was an important step in formally normalizing relations between the U.S. and the People's Republic of China. -
Paris Peace Accords.
Intended to establish pease in Vietnam and to end the Vietnam War. Ended direct U.S. military involvement, and temporarily stopped the fighting between North and South Vietnam. -
South Vietnam falls.
The last U.S. military unit left Vietnam. by that time the communists and Sount Vietnamese were already occupied in what journalists labeled the "Postwar War." -
Salt I & Salt II
This was two rounds of bilateral talks and corresponding interntional treaties involving the U.S. and the Soviet Union, on the issue of armament control. -
Iran Hostage Crisis
When the Iran Hostage Crisis happened, 52 American diplomats were held hostage for 444 days. It had ended on January 20, 1981. The western media described it as an entanglement of "vengeance and mutual incomprehension". -
USSR invades afghanistan
Troops from the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Soviet Union involved themselves in support of the Afghan communist government in its conflict with anticommunist Muslim freedom during the Afghan War, and stayed in Afghanistan until mid-February 1989. -
U.S. & Soviet boycotts of the Olympics
Soviet invasion of Afghanistan encouraged Jimmy Carter to issue a final offer that the U.S. would boycott the Moscow Olympics if the Soviet troops did not remove themselves from Afghanistan in one month. -
Korean Airlines Flight 007
This was a scheduled Korean Air Lines flight from New York City to Seoul via Anchorage. The airline was shot down by a Soviet Su-15 interceptor nearmoneron Island. -

was a U.S.-led invasion of Grenda. Triggered by a bloody military coup which had drove out a 4 year revolutionary government. The invasion resulted in a restortion of constitutional government. -

Was a political scandal in the U.S., during the Reagan administration. Senior administration officials privately facilitated the sale of arms to Iran, the subject of an arms embarge. It ended March 4th, 1987. -
Chernobyl Disaster
catastrophic nuclear accident that occured at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Was under direct authority of the centeral authorities of the Soviet Union. -
Tiananmen Square Massacre
in May of 1989, nearly a million Chinese, mostly young students, crowded into central Beijing to protest for greater democracy, and call for the registrations of Chinese Communist Party. Chinese troops and secerity police charged through Tiananmen Square, firing indiscriminately into crowds of protesters.
