The Russian Revolution included revolutions of the Russians because they were tired of the war, starving, and their Tzar. After this, Russia became a communist nation. -
Iron Curtain
This was a boundary that divided Europe into two to keep the Soviet Union communist states from contact with the West European countries. It lasted from 1945 to the end of the Cold War in 1991. -
Potsdam Conference
The Potsdam Conference was created by President Truman and Joseph Stalin in order to secure the political freedom and democratic governments throughout postwar Europe. -
Atomic bomb - Hiroshima/Nagasaki
Bombs were dropped by America on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (which were Japanese cites) towards the end of World War 2. These atomic bombs killed thousands and created massive destruction that led to the surrender of Japan. -
Truman Doctrine
This doctrine was created by President Truman. It stated that America would help aid other democratic countries in need of military, economic, and political assistance. -

The Molotov Plan was a plan created by the Soviet Union to help countries economically and politically in Eastern Europe. -
Hollywood 10
The Hollywood 10 were a small group of producers, directors, and screenwriters who were apart of HUAC (House of Unamerican Activities Committee). These people refused to answer questions (because of possible communist affiliations) and were convicted of contempt at such a prison. Most of them were blacklisted. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was a program (created by the US) of massive economic assistance against hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos. It was created to revive the working economy in Western Europe. -
Berlin Blockade
The Berlin Blockade was put up by Stalin in Berlin. He did this because he was mad that there was a new currency. He believed this move was American economic imperialism and retaliated. -
Berlin Airlift
The Berlin Airlift was administered by the US and Britain in response to the Berlin Blockade. They wanted to save Berlin so they resupplied the city by flying planes over Berlin and dropping food, medical supplies, and more. -
Alger Hiss Case
The Alger Hiss Case was when an ex communist named Whittacker Chambers accused a former state department employee, Alger Hiss, of spying for the Soviet Union. Alger Hiss was convicted of perjury. -
NATO
NATO was the North Atlantic Treaty Organization that was formed because a united defense against the Soviets was needed after the Berlin Blockade went down. It is a military agreement between the US and some countries in Europe. -

The Soviet bomb test was the first atomic bomb that the Soviets tested and the US was surprised that they quickly gained this new knowledge of weapon technology. -

The Rosenburg Trial was when Ethel and Julius Rosenburg were accused of being connected with a plot to pass US bomb secrets to the Soviet Union. They were convicted and sentenced to die in the electric chair. -
Battle of Dien Bien Phu
At Dien Bien Phu, 12,000 French paratroopers descended into the valley in Northwest Vietnam to draw the Viet Mihn into a final decisive battle to win the war. -
Army-McCarthy Hearing
Joseph McCarthy, a senator, has hearings investigating the United States Army because he thinks they are being easy on communism. McCarthy was exposed as a fraud when journalist Edward R. Murrow attacked him and his Republic tactics on his investigative TV series. -
Geneva Conference
At the conference in Geneva, it was decided that Vietnam would be divided at the 17th parallel and that the communist government would run the North and a Western administration would rule the South. -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was a military defense organization that allowed the Soviet Union to be in control of the armed forces of the member states. The agreement was signed by the Soviets and 7 European countries. -

The Hungarian Revolution was a widespread revolt across the country that was against the Hungarian government and the Soviet policies they had. -
U2 Incident
The U2 Incident was when a US U2 spy plane was shot down in Soviet air (by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) and captured the pilot. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
The Bay of Pigs Invasion occurred when the US wanted to push Fidel Castro away from being in control of Cuba. The CIA (whom were Cubans) invaded Cuba. These Cubans that the US trained for the CIA were destroyed because they had no air/naval backup. -

The Berlin Wall was created by a Soviet politician named Nikita Khrushchev because millions of East Berlin residents fled across the East Berlin border to West Germany since East Germany was repressed. He did this to isolate West Germany. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13 day impasse between the Soviet Union and US. Their disagreement was over the installation of nuclear Soviet missiles on Cuba. The resolution was that in exchange of the removal of the Cuban missiles, the US would not invade Cuba and remove American missiles targeting Soviets in Turkey. -

Diem was captured and killed the day after South Vietnam overthrew his government. The South Vietnamese were very happy. -

After MLK and RFK were assassinated, riots broke out throughout the country for the rest of the year. -

Richard Nixon won the Presidential election in 1968. He is a Democrat. -

At Kent State 4 students were killed for protesting. They were protesting the Vietnam War. -
Nixon visits China
In China, Nixon takes a dramatic first step toward normalizing relations with the communist People’s Republic of China (PRC). Nixon’s historic visit began the slow process of the re-establishing diplomatic relations between the United States and communist China. -
Ceasefire in Vietnam
