The Germans have surrendered to the Allie powers in Europe which ended the war in the West but the war in the East is still occurring. Three months after the war in the west was over, the Japanese surrender to the Americans which World War II officially came to an end. -

After the Truman Doctrine, Harry Truman signed the Marshall Plan that helped Europe recover from its ruins of World War II by providing them at around $5 billion to aid the European countries. -
Berlin Airlift
The Soviets cut off food, water, medicine and other essential supplies to West Berlin. The purpose for it was like a punishment to West Berlin for falling under the western influence and a way to gain their trust into uniting the whole Berlin. The United States and its allies sent supplies by plane into West Berlin. -
The formation of NATO
NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a major organization formed by the United States along with its alllies. Their task is to prevent Soviet expansion and not allowing another revival of a nationalist military government -
Korean War
The Korean War began when North Korea (Communist country) invaded South Korea (Capitalist country) by land and sea. The Unitted Nations and the United States sent its troops to fight the North Koreans. The purpose for North Korea invading South Korea was to have one kind of government ruling the entire Korea. -
The formation of the Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pactwas created by Soviet Union who formed an alliance with several other communist countries. This pact is similar to NATO by defending themselves against capitalist influence. The Soviet Union gets to decide what is best for the communist states in the pact -
"Sputnik" launch
On October 4, 1957,The Soviet Union launched its first Earth Satellite into space. This was a major change because advance technology has helped improve mankind. -
The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a wall that divided East and West Berlin from being together. East Berlin was communist while West Berlin was capitalist. Putting up the wall symbolize the Cold War by having two superpowers that do not get along ith each other because of their different government view. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis left the United States worried and scared because since they fail to get rid of the communist leader of Cuba Fidel Castro, Cuba was forming alliance with the Soviet Union which means that the Soviets gave supplies and weapons to Cuba. They were afraid that Cuba would lauch a bomb to the US at any time, -
The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a war that broke out between North Vietnam (Communist) and South Vietnam (Capitalist). North Vietnam was invading South Vietnam because they wanted the country to be as one whole communist country. This concerned America because if Vietnam falls to Communist, then all of its neighboring countries will fall to communist as well which is known as the Domino Thoery. -
Glasnost and Perestroika
Glasnost and Perestroika are two policy words that mean change in government and economic and having rights from government. Mikhail Gorbachev was the General Secretary of the Communist party of Soviet Union who have seen the soviet economy collapse which he made a few changes in communism. -
The Berlin Wall falls
On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall have finally been knocked down since it's been almost three decades that it divided East and West Berlin. The wall falling down sybolize that the two superpowers were calling a truce. -
The Cold War ends
On December 26, 1991, the Soviet Union was changing its government form like it was no longer a communist goverment, they were adapting to Democratic kind of government. Several countries that were part of Soviet Union became independent countries. With communism no longer a threat due to vanishing, the Cold War finally came to an end.
