Sputnik 1 was launched by the Soviets on 10/4/1957. The Space Race lasted from Aug 2, 1955- July 19, 1975. The "race" was between the Soviets and the US to gain dominance in space. -
Bay Of Pigs
It was a failed invasion for the United States in attempts to overthrow Fidel Castro. The Americans trained Cuban exiles to fight against Castro. They surrendered within 24 hours because there were too many Cuban troops. -
Berlin Wall Goes Up
East Germany set up a barbed wire and concrete wall around West Berlin. East Germany claimed it was to keep the Western "fascist" from entering and undermining East Germany. It actually stopped defections from East to West. -
US Enters Vietnam War
They entered the Vietnam War to prevent communism from spreading from North Vietnam to South Vietnam. Vietnam ended in 1975 with the North winning spreading communism. -
Soviets Invade Afghanistan
The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan for it's strategic location. They also had a ton of natural resources. They fought for 10 years before they withdrew in 1989. America helped fund the Anti-Russian Afghans. -
Berlin Wall Comes Down
The Cold War pressured the Soviet Union to remove the Berlin Wall. East and West Berliners ran through the checkpoints, climbed on the wall, and began to dismantle it. They called them "mauerspechte", wall woodpeckers
