    After World War II, the UN voted for part of Palestine to become an independent Jewish state. The Palestinians rejected the idea, but since many nations felt sympathy for the Jews because of the Holocaust, they declared independent Israel to be created. The day after becoming its own state, Israel was invaded by Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. Israel won but it was the first of many Arab-Israeli wars that will occur after the formation of Israel.

    NATO, otherwise known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was an alliance between twelve nations including the U.S. and Canada. It was a defensive alliance formed due to fears of Soviet aggression.

    The Warsaw Pact was an alliance formed by the Soviet Union and Eastern European nations in response to West Germany joining NATO.
  • Arab-Israeli Conflict

    The Arab-Israeli conflict in 1956 began when Egypt seized control of the Suez Canal. Britain had controlled the canal because Egypt couldn’t pay for it. So when Egypt tried to take it back, Britain and Israel planned to retake the canal. Israel helped because they were Britain’s allie. But when the world community forced Britain and Israel to withdraw from Egypt, it left the Suez Canal in Egypt’s possession.

    The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was put into action on March 5, 1970. It was created because of the built up arms from the Cold War. The goals of the treaty was nuclear nonproliferation (obviously, disarmament, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

    Assassination of Egyptian President Sadat
    Jimmy Carter, the U.S. President, invited Egyptian President Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to Camp David for peace negotiations. This was known as the Camp David Accords. In this agreement Egypt would recognise Israel as an independent state as long as Israel agreed to return the Sinai Peninsula. Sadat’s agreement to recognize Israel enraged many Arab countries. So in 1981, a group of Muslim extremists assassinated President Sadat.

    Before 1989, students in China had protested against the terms of the Versailles Treaty. The treaty stated that German territories, which were originally China’s territories, would be given to Japan instead of China. During 1989, the students began to protesting in hopes of seeking political reform with the premier of China.

    The Berlin Wall fell because Hungary released the East Germans if they had wanted to travel to Austria for vacations, but the East Germans traveled to West Germany and never returned home. This then causes East Germany to close its borders. The public is angered and protests broke out. In order to restore stability, the new leader of East Germany allowed the people to leave whenever they wanted to resulting in the collapse of the Communist Party.
