    The Yalta Conference was a meeting held after World War II. The meeting involved Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin and they discussed plans for Germany's fate. The Yalta Conference began the Cold War by giving Russia control of Eastern Europe.

    Formation of NATO
    NATO was formed in order to create a treaty with other countries to attempt to stop the rise of communism and to help prevent a nuclear. This relates to the GASPIRE+ theme of Political because NATO was created to form an alliance with other countries to help try and stop the increasing threat of communism. This furthered the Cold War by frustrating the Soviet Union and by uniting many countries against communism.

    The Korean War was when North Korea and South Korea began to go to war with one another. The United States sided with South Korea while China and the Soviet Union sided with North Korea. This furthered the Cold War by causing an even greater tension among themselves.

    The Vietnam War was a war between North and South Vietnam. The United States sided with South Vietnam while the Soviet Union sided with North Vietnam. This furthered the Cold War by causing much tension between the United States and the Soviet Union.

    The United States and the Soviet Union were competing to see who could be the first to get their chosen candidate to the Moon. Ultimately the United States won, but the Soviet Union was the first to get their probe to the Moon. This furthered the Cold War by adding more competition to the whole mix of tension and anxiety from before.

    The Bay of Pigs was the failed military invasion of Cuba, mounted by the CIA. The Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces were able to stop the invasion due to their leader, Fidel Castro. This impacted the Cold War by bringing the Cuban Missile Crisis ever closer.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Cuban Missile Crisis was the time when the United States and USSR were actually closest to turning Earth into an apocalyptic world. It lasted six days and nearly scared both countries a heart attack. This relates most to the GASPIRE+ theme of intellectual because both involved parties were smart enough to know that if they blew each other up there wouldn't be much planet left. The progressed the Cold War because it helped both sides to realize just how insanely stupid the whole ordeal was.

    Assasination of John F. Kennedy
    John F. Kennedy is remembered for his inspiring speeches and his ability to stay cool in tense situations, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was assassinated while he was in Houston, Texas; on his way to give a speech. This impacted the Cold War because Kennedy was the face of the nation and one of the best leaders of the time and showed dissension in America.

    The Treaty of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, or more commonly known as the NPT, was made to help prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and other weapon technologies. It also promoted cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. This relates to the GASPIRE+ theme of social because the treaty was a unifying experience for all participating countries. This furthered the progression of the Cold War because it helped lead to the eventual end of the Cold War with its peaceful message

  • Neutron Bomb

    Neutron Bomb
    In 1978, President Jimmy Carter delayed the production of a new type of bomb that would turn the tide in the Cold War, the neutron bomb. This relates to the GASPIRE+ theme intellectual because President Jimmy Carter was smart enough to know that if he launched a neutron bomb at Russia that Russia would fire back and trigger the whole nuclear war. This impacted the Cold War by ensuring that no nuclear conflict ensued.
  • Moscow Olympic Games

    Moscow Olympic Games
    The 1980 Olympic Games were held in Moscow, Russia. This was also the biggest Olympic boycott to ever occur in all of history, due to Soviet Union invading Afghanistan the year before. This most relates to the GASPIRE+ theme of social because, due to the invasion of Afghanistan, the people of 62 countries would not participate in the games, one of those countries being the United States. This furthered the Cold War by angering the Soviets and unifying the 62 countries.

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    The fall of the Berlin Wall was a great mark in history where Capitalist West Germany and Communist East Germany reunited to form Germany as we know it today. Although the demolition actually took about 2 years, it officially began November 9, 1989. This relates to the GASPIRE+ theme of geographic because in the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany was now whole and no longer split in two. This furthered the progress of the Cold War by helping even Communists to see how that idea does not work.

    Fall of the Soviet Union
    There were many causes for the fall of the Soviet Union: ethnic conflict, zero support for communism, and economic problems. Thus, the Soviet Union fell. This relates to the GASPIRE+ theme of economic because one of the reasons the Soviet Union fell was because they were having economic problems due to a focus on arms. This furthered the Cold War by ending the Soviet Union, one of the players in the nuclear war game, allowing the United States to "win".
