The Postdam Conference was a meeting between the Soviet Union, UK, and U,S,A. The meeting was to decide what they would do to the defeated Nazi Germany. -

Sputnik I & Sputnik II
The Soviet Union launched the first artifical satellite into space. Only about the size of a beach ball weighing about 180 pounds. On Nov. 3 the soviets launched Sputnik II including a dog named Laika. -

Berlin Wall Constructed
On August 12, 1961 Eastern German soldiers layed down more than 30 miles of barbed wire fence through the heart of Berlin. Eastern citizens were forbiddened to pass into Western Berlin. On August 15,1961 Eastern soldiers then began to replace the barbed wire with a concrete wall reaching 15 feet high in some places. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
In October of 1962 for 13 days Cuba and the U.S. were close to war after a spy plane caught sight of nuclear missles being built. After many meetings with his advisors he decided to place ships around Cuba to stop Soviets from bringing military supplies into Cuba. -

USS Pueblo Incident
The USS Pueblo was an American ship which was boarded and captured by North Korea. North Korea says that the boat drifted into territorial waters, but the U.S. says that the boat was in international waters at the time of the incident. The Pueblo is the only U.S. Navy ship being held captive to date. -
