    Hiroshima
    Harry S. Truman decided that he would drop this Japan to get them to surrender. Since Germany had already surrendered. After this bomb on Hiroshima Japan didn’t surrender. It wasn’t until three days later when a second bomb was dropped on Japan that they had decided to surrender. Over the year, an estimate of 200,000 people have died from this atom that was dropped.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    This doctrine was from Harry S. Truman to congress of all his plans detailed. It included that congress shall agree to aid Greece military and economically, in their fight against communism. In order for this to happen he asked for $400,000,000 for the program. He also wanted to send both military and economic advisers to countries all over the world that were being threatened by communism.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    Truman’s Secretary of State, George C. Marshall announced the Marshall plan. Also known as the European Recovery Program or for short ERP. This was an American financial aid program for Europe. They held a conference in Paris and it was agreed for Western Europe to be on a four year recovery plan. Even through the Soviet Union rejected the idea.
  • South East Asian Defense Treaty

    South East Asian Defense Treaty
    This treaty was signed by a representative of each of the following countries, United States, Australia, Britain, France, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines and Thailand. Collective action against aggression was provided. Some countries refused to join SEATO wars, and other countries simply just withdrew. The end of this organization was finally brought to an end in New York.

    Ahemd Ben Bella was a the leader of the Organization Speciale of the Party of Algerian people. He was captured but escaped to Egypt where he founded the National Liberation Front. Under his power they fought a hard war against France. Algeria finally found independence with Bella. He kept good relations in the Cold War on both sides for safety.

    Milovan Djilas is imprisoned in Yugoslavia
    Milovan Djials published the book The New Class: An Analysis of the Communist System. He argued that communism was nit right in his book, the Eastern Europe should be living better. He was sentenced to nine years of prison because of his book. He was vharged got slandering and writing hostile opinions of Yugoslavia.
  • U-2 Spy Plane

    U-2 Spy Plane
    The U-2 plane was designed by Kelly Johnson, who had already been previously responsible for other fighter planes. President Eisenhower gave the okay for the U-2 plane to fly over Moscow and Leningrad. The plane had great success. It gave the information the United States had an advantage over the Soviet Union. They also knew that the number of bomb and missiles were a lie.

    Bay of Pigs
    When the merchant ships arrived at the Bay of Pigs two out of the five were sunk. Also two planes were also shut down. Bissell and Kennedy had a meeting this night, and Kennedy was told that the operation could still be saved. Kennedy just had to allow American war planes to fly over. All the invading troops had been killed, wounded or surrendered within seventy-two hours. Kennedy admitted that the whole operation was a disaster as well as his fault.

    A CIA working in Cuba overheard Castro’s pilot saying that Cuba had now had nuclear weapons. Later the U-2 plane showed unusual activity taking place at San Cristobal. Almost a month later it the U-2 plane photographs showed that the Soviet Union had placed missiles in Cuba. Kennedy’s first reaction was to have meeting with people whose opinion he valued, they met several times and came up with six possible plans. Kennedy decided to send a letter to Khrushchev to ask him stop the missles.

    Mai Lai Massacre
    Mai Lai was arrested for murdering several Vietnamese civilians. He was sentenced to life in prison but was released after just three years. The Mai Lai massacre was a major turning point in that of the American public opinion. It showed the behavior of the US troops and that Vietnambe saved from communism. Defeating communism would be the only way to save Vietnam, since it was being severely damaged.
  • Palestine Liberation Organization

    Palestine Liberation Organization
    Various groups including Al Fatah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine formed the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). PLO used terrorist ways such as murder, hijacking and bombing. The quarters of the Israeli team was attacked by Palestinian guerillas. After this it was decided that PLO take responsibility for all Palestinians. PLO eventually split into several fractions.

    New Jewel Movement
    Joint Endeavor for Welfare and Education and Liberation joined to create JEWEL and eventually the New Jewel Movement. The NJM took over the nation’s radio station. After this they were able to gain control of the country. President Ronald Regan sent in the Marines. The fighting went on for several days. After all the fighting, Board was sentenced to death.

    US Marines invade Grenada
    The United Nations General Assembly decided the invasion of Grenada. A similar resolution was discussed but was vetoed but the United States, even after receiving a widespread of support. The leaders off the coup were arrested and put on trial. Innocent civilians were killed by the invasion, such and psychiatric patients who were accidently bombed by United States planes.

    Ronald Reagan admits to a secret arms deal with Iran
    The Irangate scandal was that Reagan was found to be selling arms to the Islamic fundamentalist government in Iran. Reagan was doing this to in return release American hostages. Although Reagan remained in office his image was damaged. It was seemed to be that Reagan was not in control of his own administration. Unfortunately Reagan’s White House chief of staff and National Security Advisor were forced to resign as result of the scandal.
  • Berlin Wall is Pulled Down

    Berlin Wall is Pulled Down
    The Berlin Wall was 166 km long and cut through 192 streets, which 97 led to East Berlin and 95 into East Germany. The wall was bordered by other walls as well, which made it very difficult to cross over to either side. Not only were the barriers, the wall was also severely guarded. Many people were both killed and seriously injured in attempt to cross over the wall. The fall of the Berlin Wall is the biggest symbolic image of the collapse and end to communism and reuniting Germany.
