The Truman Doctrine was an American foreign policy plan that helped countries escape the threat of Soviet Communism. It was announced to congress on March 12, 1947 by President Truman. -
Soviet Blockade of Berlin
The Soviet Blockade of Berlin happened from June 24,1948 until May 12, 1949. What the Soviets did was they blocked off the western allies railroad, road, and canal access to Berlin from their sectors. -
NATO Founding
On April 4,1949 the National Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded. Their main goal was to provide collective security from the Soviet Union. -
People's Republic of China Founded
After the Chinese Civil War, the communist party led by Mao Zedong had taken over the rule of China. Then on October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of China was founded. -
West and East Germany are formed.
In 1949 the four countries occupying a split Germany decided on a Western Democratic Germany and an Eastern Communist Germany. West Germany was formed on May 23,1949 and East Germany was formed on October 7, 1949. Also Berlin was split East and West as well. -

The Korean War lasted 3 years from 1950 to 1953. The two combatants were Democratic-led South Korea and Communist-Led North Korea. With those two sides to decide what government Korea would have the United Staes supported the South and the U.S.S.R supported the North. -
Stalin Note
The Stalin Note was a note that was sent to the western allies who controlled Western Germany by Joseph Stalin which said that he wanted Germany to be reunified and become neutral. However, the Western allies declined as they thought Stalin was bluffing -
East German Uprising of 1953
The East German Uprising of 1953 was a protest by East Germans against the Communist Government and the Soviets. However, during the biggest part of the protest, Soviet Tanks came in to break up the protest and in the process, they ended up killing 15-20 people. -
West Germany joins Nato
In 1955 NATO invited West Germany to join their organization. Which in that process the Bundeswehr was formed which was the first German Military after Hitler. -

Vietnam War
The Vietnam war was very similar to the Korean War in which a communist north supported by the U.S.S.R and a democratic south supported by the U.S. However, in this war the ned result was a north victory and a communist government still stands in Vietnam today. -
Suez Crisis
The Suez Crisis was a war between Israel and Egypt over who should control the Suez Canal because Egypt already nationalized the canal and Israel didn't support that. The United Kingdom and France eventually joined in to help Israel but the UN made everyone draw back troops and Egypt remained in control. -
Hungarian Uprising
Yet again other attempt at an uprising in Eastern Europe but this time it was Hungary going against the communist government set up by the Soviets. But just like the uprising in East Germany the Soviets crushed their dreams in under a month. -
Sputnik 1
In 1957 the Soviets launched the first functioning satellite into space. The Satellite was called Sputnik which in Russian simply means satellite. -
Berlin Wall begins construction
The Berlin Wall begins construction by the Soviets.The reason for the wall is the Soviets want the East Germans to not have Western influences and also not to let West Germans in. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis happened when the U.S. intelligence discovered missiles and missile launch sites in Cuba that was built by the Soviets. This cause the U.S. to freak out however about 2 weeks later the U.S. and U.S.S.R agreed to remove the weapons from Cuba and remove the Jupiter missiles in Turkey. -
Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
The Treaty was signed on October 10, 1963 and it was signed by the U.S, U.S.S.R, and GBR. The treaty stated no more nuclear testing in Space, Underwater, or in the atmosphere. -
Prague Spring Uprising
The Prague Spring uprising was yet another uprising attempt to a democracy government by Czechoslovakia. However just like the other uprisings the Soviets and this time the other countries in the Warsaw Pact agreed it was a counter-revolution. So the Soviets took control and maintained a communist government. -

On July 16,1969 the United States. launched Apollo 11 which was the mission that landed the first man on the moon. The first man to hit the moon was Neil Armstrong. -

A Foreign policy introduced in West Germany in 1972. Which said that West Germany would open up relations with Eastern Europe countries especially East Germany. -
SALT 1 and SALT 2
In 1979 the U.S and Soviet Union had a series a meetings to discuss the limitations of nuclear arms. However both countries didn't own up to these agreements and the treaties never really were in place. -
NATO double track decision is approved
TheDouble Track decision was an agreement with the Warsaw Pact that if the Soviets did not dismantle their SS-20 missiles then the U.S. could out 572 nuclear war heads in Western Europe. The deployment began in 1983 -

Soviet-Afghan War
The Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979 because they wanted to put a communist government in place. Following those actions the U.S. put sanctions on the U.S.S.R and boycotted the Moscow Olympic Games. -
Reagan's Star Wars
In 1983 Ronald Reagan Instituted a program called the Strategic Defense Initiative which protected the U.S. from any nuclear weapon attack. It was nicknamed Star Wars because the plan sounded so fictional like it was out of a movie. -
Berlin Wall Falls
The Berlin Wall fell in 1989 because all of Germany was tired of being separated so both sides damaged the walls enough to where it finally fell down. Germany was reunified later that year. -
Warsaw Pact Dissolves
In 1991 the Soviet Union and their eastern allies dissolved the Warsaw Pact. Which signaled the end to the Cold War.
