Baby Boomers
After the end of World War II, many soldiers were coming home from the war and starting their families. As most of these Veterans were enjoying the G.I. Bill for their service, The economy began to boom with industry and innovation. As the industry boomed, this caused a boom in the number of newborns, hence why they are labeled as the Baby Boomers. -
Truman Doctrine
President Truman In a speech Pledged to cntain the spread of Soviet Communism in the United States and foreign countries by offering financial aid to countries that were suffering economically like Greece and Turkey post World War II. -
Marshall Plan
Truman enacted the Marshall Plan in June 1947, after attempts were made to reach an agreement about Germany but were unsuccessful. The Marshall Plan offered financial help to European countries willing to participate. This same offer was extended to the Soviet Union. -
Berlin Airlift
Berlin was divided into two segments, the Allied Berlin, and the Soviet Berlin. The Soviets created a blockade to starve the Allied side of Berlin into joining with the Soviet Union. Allied troops then suppied the Allies with food and supplies day and night so that they could stay alive. -
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
The NATO was created to help protect nations that signed from foreign attacks and invasions. All ofthe Contries that signed were obligated to help defend another country if under attack. -
Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union allied with other communists nations and formed the Warsaw Pact. This was made in somewhat of a response to NATO and kept a military driving force in Eastern Europe. -
Vietnam War
North and South Vietnam was divied by aliances as South Vietnam was an ally of the United States, and North Vietnam was an ally of the Soviet Union. this war was to defend the freedoms of those in democracy against the threat of Communism. -
The Launch of the Sputnik
The Soviet Union launched Earth's first satelite into orbit.President Eisenhower refered to this act as the Sputnik Crisis as this created an atmosphere fear among the United States that the Soviet Union had the Technology to sent a satelite into orbit. -
The Bay of Pigs
This event was an attack by the United States against the Cuban Communist Government led by Fidel Castro.The United states attempted to mae it appear as a group attempting to overthrow the government, but Cuba had talked with the United Nations before that the United States was training mercenaries for this purpose. -
The Berlin Wall
The struggle between East and West Berlin Continued and a wall was erected between the two territories to prevent the East German inhabitants fromm fleeing to West Berlin. This wall separated the two sides for aproximately 28 years. -
The Cuban Missle Crisis
The Cuban missle Crisis was the closest time that a Nuclear war was at the brink of happening during the Cold War. The United States forces were at the ready with nuclear weapons as well as a Soviet Field commander in Cuba. Luckily this war was avoided. -
New Head of the Soviet Union
Mikhail Gorbachev became the new Leader of the Soviet Union. -
Tiananmen Square
One Million Chinese Students Protested against the Chinese Communist government and demanded a reform in the political system. -
The Fall of the Berlin Wall
The fall of the wall came as quickly as it was built. East Germany wanted to have a gradual dismemberment of the wall rather than a full revolution, but the citizens dissagreed and began to create protests to allow the other Gernams to cross the border. -
The Disolvement of the USSR
On this day, the USSR Officially dissoved allowinf each of the 15 republics to be independent.
