12 western nations established the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. American influence in Europe increased a lot by the military alliance. -
Berlin Airlift Stops
The soviet union failed to hold west Berlin hostage because the United States just flew in over 2 million supplies to the people. So the soviet union lost. It took several months for West Berlin to recover. This was a big deal because the people were saved and not held hostage anymore. -
The Rosenberg trial
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were American citizens who spied for the Soviet Union. They spied on top-secret military technology and mechanisms involving the Atomic Bomb. This was not good for the other side because they are getting there technology stolen from them. This was a big deal because the soviet union is going to have bombs. -

This was the first bomb that the United states tested that was launched in the Pacific. -
Stalin dies
Stalin was one of the seven members of the first Politburo. From the mid-1920's till his death, Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin was the leader of the soviet union. He was the leader of the communists. It was a big deal that he died because he did a lot of bad things and was a terrible leader. -

Alfred Rosenberg was the primary fabricator of Nazi ideology and was hung as a war criminal in 1953. -
Rebellion in Hungary
The rebellion was a revolt against the government of the Hungarian People's Republic, lasting from October 23 until November 10 1956. -
Suez Canal Crisis
The Suez crisis was an invasion of Egypt in the late 1956's by Israel. This was a big deal because the goal was to regain Western control of the Suez Canal and remove the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser from power. The suez crisis effected the united states and soviet union in the war. They fought to get the 3 invaders to withdraw. -
McCarthy dies
Joseph McCarthy died at the age of 48 from being an alcoholic. He was highly involved in anticommunism. -

National Aeronautics and Space Administration is a company within the government that people control and researches on space. Nasa was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. NASA is a big deal because it created space shuttles and satellites. This gives us so much more to do in the world. NASA allows us to go to space and explore. -
U-2 incident
The U-2 was a spy plane for the United states. The U-2 incident was when the u.s spy plane got shot down from invading soviet airspace. This was a civilian who was flying the plane that was photographing aerial reconnaissance. The person lost conciseness when he was in the air and accidentally flew in soviet airspace where he is not allowed. So the soviet union thought it was an attack so they shot the U-2 down. This created conflict. -

John F. Kennedy was the youngest man and cathlic to ever to be elected president of the united states. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall divided Berlin during 1961 to 1989. The wall separated west Berlin from east Berlin and opened in 1989 by government officials. The wall was built to protect its population from fascist elements and to build a socialist state in east Germany. The wall served to keep communist emigration. -
Cuban missile crisis
This event lasted 13 days from October 16th to 19th. The October crisis conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union becomes friends with Cuba and put missiles over there because Cuba can hit the United states.
