Soviet atomic bomb porject
this project was directed By Joseph Stalin. The full scale project began in WW2 and ended after the cold war. After Stalin herd about America bombing Japan, this project was a much higher priority in the Soviet Union. most of the information that Russia got was from a undercover Soviet spy that was involved in the Manhattan project. -
Iron Curtain
A non-physical boundary that divided Europe, east from went. The east side was under Soviet rule and the west was under NATO alliance. separate international economic and military alliances were crated on either sides. -
The Potsdam Confrence
a conference between the allied leaders (Truman and Churchill) and Joseph Stalin. they discussed post war power, peace treaty issues and how to get Europe to recover from war. the things they agreed on eventually fell apart, because they were dealing with a dictator. -
Atomic Bombs
the head of the Manhattan project was Robert Oppenheimer. The Manhattan project was run in the New Mexico desert and over 2 billion dollars was spent on the nuclear warfare research. two bombs were dropped on Japan in august of 1945. both devastated the cities they were dropped on and the effects of the radiation is still having repercussions to this day. -
Molotov Plan
A system created by the Soviet Union to rebuild in eastern Europe that were economically under Soviet rule. This was created because the Soviet Union did not agree with the Marshall plan and decided to create their own. The Soviet's point of view towards the Marshall plan was that the Allied powers were trying to weaken the Soviet union. So, they rejected their aid. -

The house of un-american activities comity deemed many hollywood actors and directors part of the communist party because of the films that were made. none of the people were communists but ten of the directors would not answer questions until congress gave them the evidence that they had against them. all 10 were arrested for contempting the jury and sent to prison. -
Long telegram
George F. Kennan wrote under the name 'X' to outline his opinions of the Soviet Union. He was like an under cover agent that was observing and reporting back to the US government. Kennan was the Deputy Chief of Mission. In this telegram he suggested the concept of containment. This is keeping communism in one spot. they wanted to keep communism out of Grease and Turkey. -
Truman doctrine
President Truman pledged to contain threats in Greece and Turkey. the US government voted to give aid to these countries. this doctrine's sole purpose was to protect Countries from Soviet rule. -
Marshall plan AKA European Recovery Program
George C. Marshall created the American initiative passed to help aid Western Europe after World War 2 destroyed it. To help them get their economic and social structure back. this plan would take about $12 Billion to make happen, but it was better than the countries turning to communism to just get food. the Marshall plan provided the equipment needed to boost their economy and feed their people. -
Berlin Blockade/ airlift
The first Major international conflict between the East and West of Europe, during the Cold War. the Red army directed by the Soviet union blocked Western Allie's road, canal and railroad access into Berlin, Germany. this lasted almost one year. America carried supplies by plane to Berlin and helped the people that lived there live. -

Mao Zedong created Peoples Republic of China, which caused a full scale civil war against the Chinese Communist Party. this marked the fall of Mainland china to communism in china -

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a intergovernmental military treaty between twenty nine North American and European countries. these places all agree on mutual defense against outside sources. -
Korean war
June 25, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea, following this invasion was a series of attacks. North Korea said they were trying o liberate the Fatherland. the Northern half was a socialist state ran by Kim II-sung. the Southern half was a capitalist state and ran by Syngman Rhee. Neither leader thought the border was permanent, so the Northern Army invaded and the UN deployed troops to help the south. -
Alger hiss case
Alger Hiss was an American government official that was convicted of spying for the Soviet union. He was convicted of two counts of perjury and espionage and sentenced to two- five year stints in prison. he only served three and a half years. -
Rosenberg trial
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of giving valuable US information to the Soviet Union. This information included; radar, sonar, jet get propulsion and nuclear weapon designs. this was when the united states was the only country that had nuclear weapons. they were convicted of espionage in 1951 and executed by electric chair in 1953. -
Army McCarthy Hearings
The US Army held a hearing to investigate senator Joseph McCarthy and his involvement in giving white straight men jobs they weren't qualified for. In return, McCarthy counter charged the Army for bad faith and aggressive hunt for communists in the Army -
Hungarian Revolution
Student led protests through the streets of Hungary. this was to show Stalin that they were no linger under Soviet Union's rule. This was the First major Threat to Soviet rule. The State security police were sent to control the protests and killed many people in the process. The students wanted to voice their demands and make their point known. one protester that died was rapped in a Hungarian flag and held up for everyone to see. -
U2 Incident
a American spy aircraft was shot down over Soviet Union territory. Originally, America did not want to admit it was a spy plane. The aircraft was flown by Francis Powers and he parachuted to safety and was captured by Russian officials. This made relations with Russia difficult. powers was sentenced to three years in prison and later he was traded for another Russian officer. America was embarrassed. -
Invasion of Czechoslovakia
the joint invasion of Czechoslovakia by the five countries included in the Warsaw Pact. these countries included the Soviet Union, Poland, Bulgaria, East Germany and Hungary. Czechoslovakia had been being run by a communist government and had had enough. during the de-stalinazation, they led protests and were eventually invaded. 137 Czechoslovakians were killed and hundreds were seriously injured. -
Nixon Visits China
Nixon visited the Peoples Republic of China and this was a good because he was showing everyone that we were friends. after 25 years of nor friendship and no diplomatic ties. Nixon visited China for more leverage over the Soviet Union. -
Reagan elected
49th presidential election. Reagan was a republican that beat Jimmy carter, a democrat, due to the rise of conservatism. this started what people were calling the "Reagan era". He won the election by a landslide, a large portion of the electoral vote and 50% of the electoral vote. also ignored thousands of people dying from AIDS in his own country. -

A cold war-era meeting in Switzerland to discuss arms race and diplomatic relations. Both Switzerland and the US wanted to cut the number of nuclear weapons that the Soviet Union had. they did not want another war to be started. they become friends, but did not limit any arms yet -

also known as the Berlin Wall Speech. Reagan asked Gorbachev to take down the Berlin wall. He didn't understand how it was still up after so many years. he wanted the separation of Berlin to be stopped, because he knew that they would be stronger together. -
