As a successor to the League of Nations, this organization of countries is another attempt to bring peace between countries. It also included a Security Council with 5 powerful countries having veto power. -
Greek Civil War
A battle between Greek Communists and the Greek Government over ideologies. -
Marshall Plan
A plan for America to help rebuild Europe to prevent being suspected of communism. -
Truman Doctrine
President Truman's pledge to provide support for any country fighting against Communist ruled countries such as Greece and Turkey. -
Berlin Blockade
Soviet authorities blocked off any entry into Berlin to prevent a take over of the capital from surrounding anti-Soviet countries. -
Berlin Airlift
The Allies decision to provide supplies for their people that lived in Berlin. However, Soviet's never lifted the barricade. -
NATO is established
An organization between the U.S., Canada, and other Western European Countries to defend against the Soviet Union. -
China Civil War
A war between the Communists and the Nationalists of the China population. However, China falls to Communism at the end of the war. -
Second Red Scare
This Red Scare was caused by the belief that there were communists infiltrating the U.S. in both its society and government. -
Inchon Landing
An attempt by the U.S. to perform a secret attack on North Korea. This resulted in North Korea having to bring back their troops over the 38th Parallel. -
Korean War
A war in which America (South Korea) and the Soviet Union (North Korea) had battled against each other intensely for the first time. -
Cuban Revolution
The revolution was led by Fidel Castro to go against Cuba's current leader Fulgencio Batista, who was later forced out of the country. -
Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union's response to the formation of NATO. The organization consisting of the Soviet Union and the other Communist countries. -
Vietnam War
This war was mostly caused by the American's fear of communism spreading in Asia. It was the Communists of North Vietnam verses South Vietnam, who was supported by America. -
The Space Race
A race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for space technology after the Soviets caused the Sputnik Crisis when launching the Sputnik satellite. However, in 1969, the U.S. was able to bring this race to an end once they made the first successful trip to the moon. -
U-2 Incident
An United States U-2 spy plane was shot down by the opposing Soviet Union. The plane was used as a surveillance aircraft to gather information. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
An American attack on Cuba with the intention of overthrowing their leader Fidel Castro. The plan was to support them from the air, but the missiles had failed. -
Berlin Crisis
The Soviet Union had demanded that all armed forces be withdrawn from the area. This was to keep the East German's from thriving. -
Berlin Wall is built
A wall built around Berlin, Germany to keep Germans from escaping into western territories. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
An event where the U.S and Soviet Union leaders stood off for 13 days over in Cuba. However, the Soviets missiles were not fired after an agreement was formed between the two leaders. The Soviets were to not fire the missiles if the U.S. promises to not invade Cuba. -
Tet Offensive
An attack on many South Vietnam cities with the intentions of pushing back America's involvement in the Vietnam War -
Non-Proliferation Treaty
A treaty brought upon by the United Nations in hopes to put an end to the use and creation of nuclear weapons. -
Soviet-Afghan War
A war between the Soviet-led Afghans and rebel groups. These rebel groups were supported by the U.S. This was the United State's way of fighting the Soviets without having to be directly involved against them. -
Perestroika and Glasnost
Both policies were put in place by the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in hopes of reforming Russia and bringing the Cold War to a close. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
The tear down of the Berlin Wall holds great significance. It marks the end of the Cold War and brought West and East Germany together again since 1945.
