The "Big Three" met and discussed important decisions regarding the future progress of the war and the postwar world. Lasted from February 4-11, 1945 -
Victory in Europe
Germany surrenders to the Allies in World War II officially ending the European front of the war. Now the Allies can focus solely on Japan. -
Potsdam Conference
Lasted from July 17- August 2,1945. Churchill later replaced by Attlee representing Great Britiain, Stalin representing USSR, Truman who replaced FDR representing the U.S. met to negotiate terms for the end of WWII and postwar borders. -

United States drops atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. -

United States drops atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. -

Japan surrenders to the Allies officially ending WWII. Known as "V-J Day". -

Speech made by Winston Churchill the former Prime Minister of Great Britain. This speech given at Westminster College was considered one of the opening volleys that announced the beginning of the Cold War. -

Poland becomes a communist state under Stalin during the Parliamentary elections. -
Truman Doctrine
The Doctrine established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces. -
Marshall Plan
This established that the United States will provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe. Named after Secretary of State George Marshall. -
Blockade
In Berlin, Germany there is a blockade from the USSR and the U.S. lift. -
N.A.T.O.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization was organized. This is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty. -

The second Red Scare Begins. This time started from Senator McCarthy. This scare killed people and threw others in jail. Even made a lot suspected people lose their jobs. -
Korean War
The Korean War officially begins. The war is between Communist North Korea backed by the Soviet Union and Democratic South Korea backed by the United States. -
Dwight D. Eisenhower
The United States has a new President. We elected Dwight D. Eisenhower President. -
Joseph Stalin dies
Joseph Stalin communist leader of the Soviet Union died at the age of 74. He was the communist leader from the mid-20's to his death in 1953. He was nicknamed the "man of steel". -
Rosenburg
Julius and Ethel Rosenburg were executed during the second Red Scare. The Rosenburgs were arrested and executed for being spys for the Soviet Union by selling them atomic secrets. -
Korean War ends
The Korean War officially ends in 1953 after 3 years of fighting. The country still to this day remains seperated at the 38th parallel. Communist North Korea and Democratic South Korea. -
Vietnam Splits
The country of Vietnam is split at the 17th parallel in 1954. The north is communist and the south is democracy. -
S.E.A.T.O.
In 1954 the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization was created. It was created for collective defense in Southeast Asia. -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was a collective defense treaty among eight communist states of Central and Eastern Europe in existence during the Cold War. -
America in Vietnam
On this day there was officially American involvement in Vietnam. United States helped South Vietnam. The U.S. got involved in Korea and now Vietnam to try and stop the spread of Communism. -
Eisenhower Doctrine
The Eisenhower Doctrine states that a country could request American economic assistance and/ or aid from U.S. military forces if it was being threatened by armed aggression from another state. -

During the Space Race the U.S.S.R. put the first thing in space. That thing is called Sputnik. -

Soviet Unions' Nikita Khrushchev and American Vice- President Richard Nixon have the "Kitchen Debate." the Kitchen Debate was a series of impromptu exchanges between Nixon and Khrushchev at the opening of the American National Exhibition at Sokolniki Park in Moscow. -

United States U2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. -
U.S.S.R. has a new leader
Leonid Brezhnev becomes the new leader of the Soviet Union. Brexhnev ruled the country from 1964 to his death in 1982. -
U.S. has a new President
John F. Kennedy was elected President of the United States on November 8, 1960. -
Russian orbits Earth
U.S.S.R. Astronaut Gagarin orbits Earth. This is the first man to be sent to space. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs is an invasion by the U.S. into Cuba. This invasion was an utter failure. -

Berlin, Germany border is now closed. -
Construction in Berlin
The Berlin Wall construction has started. The wall was to keep the East and West Germans on their own side. They could not cross the wall at all. -
Missile Crisis
Cuban Missile Crisis was dealt with by Kennedy. Soviets had put missiles in Cuba just 90 miles off of the Florida coast. The Missile Crisis lasted from October 22- November 4, of 1962. -
"Ich Bin Ein Berliner"
President John F. Kennedy traveled to Berlin, Germany and delivered his famous "Ich Bin Ein Berliner" speech. It means I am a Berliner. -
Kennedy assassinated
While driving through Dallas, Texas President Kennedy was shot fatally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. Lyndon B. Johnson took over as President of the United States. -
Vietnam War starts
The Gulf of Tonkin Incident signifies the start of the Vietnam War. Named because the U.S. Maddox shot two North Vietnamese torpedo boats. -
Tet Offensive
The U.S. sustained heavy losses but the South Viatnamese troops and the U.S. troops were able to repel the communist troops. This offensive weakened the U.S. support for the war. -

Richard M. Nixon is elected President of the United States. -
First man on the moon
The United States put the first man on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrine put an American flag on the moon. We achieved what President Kennedy said we would. The two Astronauts said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." -

Poland finally becomes independent from Soviet control. This happens after a whole bunch of street fighting during the 1980's. Sadly these were common. -
Falling of the wall
The Berlin Wall finally falls in 1989. This means that now people in Germany can travel to the other side and finally be reunited with family and friends. -
Reunited at last
With the Berlin Wall gone the East and West Germany can finally reunite. Now they can finally feel like their own full country. -
Ending of Pact
The Warsaw Pact has finally come to an end. -
President of Russia
Instead of communist leaders they now have a President. Boris Yeltsin is elected President of Russia. -
Cold War Ends
The Soviet Union has finally dissolved which means that the Cold War is finally over. -
