President Truman States the Truman Doctrine

President Harry Truman presented the Truman Doctrine asking Congress for $400 million to assist Turkey and Greece in their military and economically. Initially, Great Britain was the financial support that both Greece and Turkey needed in order to survive. When Great Britain took away that support, the United States then became responsible for the aid of Turkey and Greece. The Truman Doctrine was an attempt to gather money to support Turkey and Greece. -
Berlin Blockade
websiteThe Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway and road access to the sectors of Berlin under Allied control. Their aim was to force the western powers to allow the Soviet zone to start supplying Berlin with food and fuel, thereby giving the Soviets practical control over the entire city. However the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force and the United States Air Force flew over 200,000 flights in one year, providing 13,000 tons of daily necessities. Ending in the split of Germany. -
Formation of the NATO

To gaurd against this, in 1949 the united states had persuaded most of west european nations to join them in a military alliance called the Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The idea was that if any member of the NATO pact was attacked all other members would help that nation fight back. -
KGB is established
The KGB is part of the secret police force. It started as Cheka in 1917 but slowly evolved into the KGB as the organization got new leaders. All of KGB’s predecessors used terror as the means to control public dissent while using idealism to recruit agents in foreign countries. The KGB came to an end at the end of the Cold War in 1991.

Formation of the War Saw Pact

They did this in 1955, after west Germany had became a part of NATO. This had increased the tension between the USSR and the U.S because if they had attacked Western Europe that would mean the Americans would be at war. -
Poznan Uprising
websiteThe Poznan protests or the Poznan uprisings were some of the first major protests by the Polish people. They protested against the communist government demanding better work environment and conditions. 100,000 people gathered in the center of the city next to the UB secret police building. The people stood up against 400 tanks and 10,000 soldiers and eventually were shot at leaving between 50 people to over a hundred people dead. -
Sputnik is launched into orbit

Sputnik was a satellite, launched by the U.S.S.R, that took around 98 minutes to orbit Earth’s path. It was very important to the Cold War because it was the first satelite ever launched into space adn it started the "space race" between the U.S and the U.S.S.R. This launch scared the people because they thought that since Russia could launch satelites, that they could launch missiles that carried nuclear weapons. -
Cuban Missile Crisis

In 1962 the Soviets were far behind the US in the arms race so Nikita Khrushchev thought he could put intermediate-range missiles in Cuba. Fall of the Soviet Union, end of Cold War
In December of 1991 the Soviet Union split into fifteen separate countries. The United States rejoiced as its enemy was brought to its knees, ending the Cold War. The collapse was hailed by the west as a victory for freedom, a triumph of democracy over totalitarianism, and evidence of the superiority of capitalism over communism.
