    Was an act passed in Quebec by the Union Nationale to prevent the spread of comunist propaganda. It said that anyone who was promoting the spread of comunist propoganda would be inpisioned for 3 to 13 months as well as the company/organization they worked for woul dbe padlocked by the government. This helped to ensure everyone in canada was pro-capitalism

    Gouzenko testimony finally releasedIgor Sergeyevich Gouzenko was a spy for the USSR in ottawa although he was against comunism and therefore wanted to help Canada. He exposed secrets about the USSR nuclear program although he was ignored at first eventually Prime Minister Mackenzie King began to investigate espionage in Canada.

    Berlin Airlift The Berlin Blockade was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War.The Soviets and the Germans physically blocked the Western Allies' railways, roads and canal accesses of birlin that was under the control of the Allies, to give the Soviets the responsibitlity of supplying Berlin with food and feul, also giving them full control of the entire city. This forced USA to fly supplies into Berlin over communist territiory using a program they setup called the Berlin airlift.

    NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
    NATO was created as a military defence organization. It's purpose was to protect the public from any Soviet threat. All members are in an agreement to help defend any country involved in NATO to defend if an attack took place. Canada was one of the founding members of NATO as well as United States, Canada, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and the United Kingdom.

    This war was a result of the political devision of Korea as a country. It was between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. With almost 2,000 casualties for Canadian soldiers, this war was very violent and many people from all over the country were killed or wounded.

    Vietnam War & Draft Dodgers in Canada
    PlatoonTens of thousands of men (also called the "draft dodgers") came to Canada during the Vietnam War to avoid conscription and entering the Vietnam war. The Vietnam war was a military conflict between communist-supporting counrties and anti-communist countries. Tens of tousands were killed in the war it was brutal. The US was in way over their head and lost the war.

    Suez Crisis and Lester B. Pearson awarded Nobel Prize
    Lester B Pearson earned a Nobel Prize for Peace in 1957 for his top of the line solution to Suez Crisis, which was battle over the newly-found region of Isreal. The Arabs were determined to destroy the land when large groups of Jews moved into it. Britian and france joined israel as they bombed cairo the United States, the Soviet Union and the United Nations playing major roles in forcing Britain, France and Israel to withdraw. This shows Canadas great peacekeeping skills as Pearson was Canadian

    Sputnik and Canada's Space Program
    Launch of SputnikThe Sputnik was the world's first satelite to orbit the earth, launched successfully by the Soviet Union. It was the start of the 'Space Race' which contributed to much of the competition in the cold war. In 1981, the Canadarm was first used which was a Canadian invention that acted as a large mechanical arm that was used to repair and launch satelites and pick up payloads. The Canadarm is currently mounted on the international space station.

    NORAD Tracks Santa The North American Air Defence (NORAD) was an agreement between Canada and the US stating that in the event of an attack, they would defend eachother. The Americans built the Distant Early Warning sysem (DEW line) to be ale to predict any aircraft approach from the enemy. It would then notify the NORAD headquarters located in Colorado, US. The DEW line included detection systems as well as missile launch sites.

    The supersonic Bomarc missiles were the first long-range anti-aircraft missiles. Rocket boosted and then ramjet powered, they were capable of carrying conventional or nuclear warheads. John Diefenbaker had them placed in Canada with 2 sites in ontario and Quebec for a total of 56 missiles.

    Summit Series - Canada Vs. USSR - Game 8Was an eight-game series of ice hockey between the Soviet Union and Canada, held in September 1972. It was the first competition between the Soviet national team and a Canadian team. It was the first international ice hockey competition for Canada after Canada had withdrawn from international ice hockey competitions in a dispute with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). As a shock to Canada the USSR was tough but Canada came out on top Boosting national pride by a long shot.

    Nov. 9, 1989: The Berlin Wall FallsOn the 9th of November, 1989, the Border separating Western from Eastern Germany was effectively opened. The Communist Bloc of Germany was weakening well the capitalist bloc was stengthening and this lead to the downfall of the Berlin Wall which was a symbol of Cold war Ending. This was a shock to the citizens of germany but needed to be done. The wall was effectivly removed Nov 10th 1989

    In December of 1991, as the world watched in amazement, the Soviet Union disintegrated into fifteen separate countries. Its collapse was hailed by the west as a victory for freedom, a triumph of democracy over totalitarianism, and evidence of the superiority of capitalism over socialism. This finally ended the cold war.
