The Yalta Conference
Most historians belive that the Yalta Conference was the begining of the tension between Soviet Russia and the United States. The US, Britain, France and Russia pledged to hold democratic elections in Germany and the countries it controlled after WWII. Russia didn't keep the agreement and made a pro-Communist government in Poland. -

The Truman Doctrine was made to help other countries to resist communism. Greece and Turkey were aided by this policy. -
The Berlin Blockade was issued
This casuses the Berlin Airlift which all supplies that went to West Berlin were flew in by airplane. The Soviets lifted the blockade 11 months later. -
The nuclear arms race begins
The Soviets test it's first atomic bomb and since then the Americans were the only to do so. -
The Korean War begins
The Communist Russians and Chinese supported North Korea and it invaded South Korea in an attempt to spread communism. Two days later, the U.S. sent in troops to support South Korea. Members of the United Nations (UN) voted on if they were to send their troops into South Korea. The Soviet representative was boycotting the council and didn't veto the decision. Sixteen UN members sent in troops to South Korea. -

The Russians launches the first man-made satelite to go into space. This also starts the space race between the U.S. and Russia. -

Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba
Fidel Castro, a communist leader, takes control of Cuba and allies with the Soviet Union. -
Russians spot a U2 Spy Plane
The Soviets shot down an American U2 spy plane that was spying on Russia. For four years, the plane was photographing Russia. Nikita Khrushchev wanted an apology from Eisenhower but he refused. -
The Bay of Pigs Invasion
The Cuba government was communist and recieved military aid from the Soviets. Also they seized millions of dollars' worth of American property. John F. Kennedy ordered Cuban exiles to invade Cuba at the Bay of Pigs to overthrow Fidel Castro. The mission was poorly planned and failed badly. -
The Berlin Wall
The Soviets build a wall in Berlin to prevent people from going from East Berlin to West Berlin. West Berlin was controlled by Great Britain, France and the U.S. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviets were secretly housing missiles in Cuba. JFK order a naval blockade to prevent any more. Kennedy and Khrushchev eventually came to an agreement and the U.S. removed their weapons from Turkey while the Russians took away thier missiles in Cuba. -
France explodes a hydrogen bomb
France broke away from the Western Powers of the US and Western Europe and stengthened their relations with the U.S.S.R. and other nations of Eastern Europe. Then they sid with the Arabs in the Arab-Israeli War while the West sided with the Israelites. -
Czechoslovakia is invaded
Russia, Bulgaria, East Germany, Hungary and Poland invaded Czechoslovakia because they were trying to give more individual freedom to its people. -
Apollo 11 lands on the moom
The U.S. lands its first lunar lander on the moon. We are the first to land on the moon and this is an important event in the space race becasue the Soviets didn't land on the moon yet. -
SALT I is signed
Nixon and Brezhnev, the soviet leader, sign SALT I which limited the production of US and Soviet nuclear weapons. SALT stands from Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. Later they signed SALT II which limited long-range bomebers and missiles. -
A ceasefire is ordered in Vietnam
A ceasefire is ordered between the US and North Vietnamieze. Nixon gradually takes out troops and then North Vietnam defeat the South. -
Russia invades Afganistan
There were rebels in Afganistan and the government asked Russia to help. The rebels were supported by the US and other non-Communist countries. -
The Berlin Wall is begining to be destoyed
The Berlin Wall being destroyed is a symbol to the world from Ronald Reagan that the Cold War is over.
