Joseph McCarthy was a senator. He scared people into believing lots of innocent people were communists during the Cold War. His blaming of innocen people became known as McCarthyism. He spent five years doing this. He was very intimidating, and people feared to speak out against him.

Truman Doctrine announced
Truman's address officially announced the Cold War. The Truman Doctrine was Truman's plege to provide economic and military aid to countries threatened by Communism. It outlined the parameters of the Cold War. A lot of people didn't support it, but it did set guidelines.

Fidel Castro comes to power
Fidel Castro joined the Cuban People's Party in 1947. The party was against corruption, injustice, poverty, unemployment and low wages. In 1952, he was a candidate for Congress in the Cuban People's Party. He believed strongly in morality. He also wanted to have power over everything. Some of his new laws upset the US, which would soon cause trouble.

U-2 Crisis
The crisis happened when Soviets shot down a US U-2 plane.
Eisehnower was forced to admit that the US had been spying on the USSR by the CIA for several years. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. After 2, there was a "spy swap." He had to give back a captured Soviet agent.

Kennedy becomes president
John F. Kennedy was the youngest man to ever be elected president in the US. He was also the first Catholic. He beat out Richard Nixon. The campaign was fought hard, and it was watched on television, Nixon took every opportunity to call Kennedy to young and inexperienced. He was involved in the failure of the Bay of Pigs and the construction of the Berlin Wall.

Bay of Pigs Invasion
It was a failed attempt to try and overthrow the Cuban government run by Fidel Castro. President Kennedy could've used the Air Force on the Cubans, but he decided not to. The Cuban Army stopped the invasion. The fighting ended two days later. This invasion did make Castro scared, though. He feared the United States coming in contact with Cuba again.

Cuban Missile Crisis
In a televised speech, President Kennedy said that the US spy planes have discovered Soviet missile bases in Cuba. This was awful, considering Cuba is so close to the US. This was the closest the world has ever gotten to a nuclear war. It was settled, and things turned out okay. Now there is a hotline where the US president and Soviet leader can talk directly in times of crisis.

Escalation in the Vietnam War
In February, there was a raid that killed 8 US soldiers in a campaign. In June, the US reached 75,000 troops in Vietnam. In July, he wanted an additional 100,000 troops. He also allocated 100,000 more for 1966. Johnson also made several changes in leadership.

The tet offensive was a series of major attacks launched by communist forces in South Vietnam. The Vietcong and the North Vietnamese Army together was 85,000. It was a defensive attack. Vietnam arranged the attack. It was over the Vietnamese New Year, and broke the cease-fire.

Vietnamization starting
The war had been going on for 4 years now. 31,000 Americans had been killed in the war already. They were behind schedule with 540,000 Americans over in Vietnam with no plans to reduce the number. President Nixon said all of that in his speech. Hardly any progress had been made and he wanted to end the war. He wanted to end it by turned over the fighting to the South Vietnamese while US troops gradually pulled out.

Kent State
Kent State was a college that was protesting against the Vietnam War. This was because President Nixon announced that 150,000 more soldiers were needed for the war effort.Twenty-eight guardsmen killed four people, and they injured nine. The charges of the men were dismissed for lack of evidence. Nearly 500 colleges were shut down by the protests.
