    Berlin Airlift

    The Soviet blockade the land routes into West Berlin, the U.S began a massive airlift of food, water, and medicine to the citizens. Over 200,00 planes carried in more than one and a half million tons of supplies. By the time the Soviets ended the blockade, West Germany became separate and independent.

    Creation of NATO

    Founded by the US. Reason to respond to a Russian invasion of western Europe. Idea: if one of them are attacked the attacker fights them all.

    Korean War

    The North Korean army pushed its way into Seoul, which caused the U.S troops go into war against North Korea. President Harry Truman and General Douglas MacArthur had a plan to liberate North Korea and their plan was a success. An amphibious assault at Inchon pushed North Korea back to their side of the 38th parallel.

    Creation Of Warsaw Pact

    Russian way of copying the Allies NATO organization. somehow it’s “different”. The Soviet Union and its affiliated Communist nation in Eastern Europe founded a rival alliance.

    After the rise of Ho Chi Minh and his communist party continued against the intense Cold War. President Richard Nixon order to withdraw the U.S forces and the Communist forces seized Saigon which ended the Vietnam war.

    On October 4th the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik 1. After it was launched the U.S Defense Department responded to the political furor by approving funding for another U.S satellite project.

    Construction of the Berlin Wall

    Joseph Stalin wanted to take control of all of Berlin. Did not want Germany to unite and cut off Western part of Germany’s resources and took over the eastern part of Germany.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    The leaders in the U.S and in the Soviet Union they engaged in a tense 13 day political and military stand off in 1962. Many people fear that there will be a nuclear war, but it was avoided when the U.S agreed with the Soviet Union to remove the Cuban missile in exchange for the U.S promising not to invade Cuba.

    Moon Landing

    Apollo 11 was launched to the moon and 3 astronauts arrived on the moon. July 19, after Apollo 11 had been flown behind the moon out of contact with Earth, came the first lunar orbit insertion maneuver. After re-entry procedures were initiated July 24, 44 hours after leaving the lunar orbit.

    Destruction of the Berlin wall

    The Cold War began to thaw, more than 2 million people from East Berlin visited the West Berlin to participate in a celebration. People began to bring hammers and picks to take down the wall. The chunks of the wall became known as “wall woodpeckers”.
