  • First issue of the Liberator

    First issue of the Liberator
    The Liberator was an anti slavery newspaper started by William Garrison Lloyd Garrison. Garrison was the first white American to call for an immediate end to slavery. In his first issue he wrote "I will be harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice... I will not retreat a single inch and I will be heard. The first newspaper was published on January 1, 1831. Its final issue was published on December 29, 1865.
  • Compromise of 1850 passed

    Compromise of 1850 passed
    The Compromise of 1850 was passed in September of 1850. It was proposed my Henry Clay a senator of Kentucky. Admitted California as a free state and made slavery illegal in Washington D.C. It also passed a new fugitive slave act that stated anyone who helped a slave would be fined or imprisoned.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin Published

    Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was published on March 20, 1852. It was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book described the life of a slave. It told about all of the work slaves did on plantations and how they were treated very unfairly by their owners.
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act passed

    Kansas - Nebraska Act passed
    The Kansas- Nebraska Act was passed on May 30, 1854. Senator Stephen Douglas introduced the bill. It allowed Nebraska and Kansas to decide whether or not to have slavery. This would repeal the Missouri Compromise which didn't allow slavery north of latitude 36 30.

    James Buchanan sworn into office as 15th president
    James Buchanan ran against John Fremont and Millard Fillmore. James was a candidate from the democrat party. He won with 174 electoral votes and 1,838,169 popular votes.
  • Dred Scott decision

    Dred Scott decision
    Dred Scott was an enslaved African American. His owner John Emerson brought him place to place. Brought him to free states. Dred Scott beleived that since he was in free land he should become free. The supreme court ruled that they could not take away a piece of property because African Americans were considered property.
  • Abraham Lincoln elected president of the U.S.

    Abraham Lincoln elected president of the U.S.
    Abraham Lincoln was our 15th President of the U.S. He was part of the Republican party. They believed that they should leave slavery where it was but ban it in new territories. He was elected on November 6, 1860.
  • South Carolina seceded from the Union

    South Carolina seceded from the Union
    South Carolina seceded form the Union on December 20, 1860. South Carolina seceded from the Union because they beleived if Abraham Lincoln became President that he would ban slavery in all territories in the U.S. This started a chain reaction. IN the end Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Floridan and Georgia had followed South Carolina's example.

    Battle Fort Sumter begins
    The battle began at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Fort Sumter is most well known for if being the first shot that started the civil war. When Abraham Lincoln announced he was going to resupply the for General P.G.T Beauregard bombarded the fort. After 36 hours Major Robert Anderson of Fort Sumter surrendered.

    The battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the Civil War. This took place in but a town called Manasseh. In the end of the war the Union fled to Washington D.C. and led to a Confederate win.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863 by Abraham Lincoln. This declared that all slave would now be free.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    The battle took place in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. It lasted three days July 1 though 3 1863. This was a very bloody battle. Robert E. Lee rushed 25,000 troops into Gettysburg. This ended in a North victory but both the North and South lost over 20,000 men fighting.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman's March to the Sea
    Sherman's march to the Sea began on November 15 to December 21 1863. William T. Sherman lead 62,000 troops from Atlanta to the port of Savannah. This lead to a Union win. Their strategy was slash-and-burn. They slashed or burned anything they saw was of value to the confederates.

    The Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
    The Surrender at Appomattox was the last battles in the Civil war. Robert E. Lee surrendered from the Confederates to General Grant ending the the Civil War.
  • Lincoln's Assassination

    Lincoln's Assassination
    Lincoln was killed on April 15, 1856 in Washington D.C. Lincoln was killed by John Wilkes Booth while he was at the Ford Theater. This happened only five days after the Civil War ended.
