-The Northern and Southern politicians have debates over whether slavery should be permitted or not.
-Henry Clay also know as a great compromiser settles the debate by allowing maine to be permitted into the US as a free state, and Arkansas as a slave state.
-The Missouri compromise was a series of laws that helped maintain the balance of slave and free states. -

The Nullification Crisis
-Vice President John C Callhoun stated that any state could nullify a federal law if it considers to be unconstitutional.
-When the goverment denied the arguement made by South Carolina, the state threatened to secede.
-Henry Clay then promptly came up with a compromise and lowered the tariff.
-The south thought that tariffs were unfair because they were only useful to the north. -
Compromiseof 1850
-Congress had many heated debates over whether or not the new states recieved from Mexico would be slave states.
-Henry Clay made a compromise between the north and the south.
-California would be admitted as a free state
--Congress could not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories won from Mexico -in Washington DC slavery would be abolished. -
Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
-The fugitive slave act was an act passed by congress that allowed them to capture runaway slaves that escaped to the north.
-These laws raised tension in the United States and it set the stages for John Brown's raid and the American Civil War. -
Bleeding Kansas 1855
-5000 proslavery people from Missouri came to vote in Kansas towards proslavery illegally.
-Anti-slavery opponents started their own government
-The antislavery government was attacked by proslavery forces. -
Dred Scott Decision
-Scott was a slave who lived in the free state of Illinois and Wisconsin
-he later moved to a slave state which was missouri
- Court declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional
- Salvery permitted in all of the country's territories
- All blacks reguaredless of free or slave could not be US citizens -
Attack on harpers ferry 1859
- Planned to capture the arsenal in Virgina to arm the slaves -Abolitionists saw Brown as a hero and saluted him -John Brown wanted to inspire salves to fight for freedom
- Slavery tensions rose.
