Fort Sumter - 1861
The Union had taken away a fort and the Confederates were angry. They had a 34 hour battle. The Union had to surrender and the Confederates won. No one died. -
Battle of Antietam - 1862
The bloodiest day in U.S history in one day. General Lee and the Confederate were stopped by Union armies and by night, 26,000 people were dead with many casualties. The Confederate withdrew, and the Union won. -
The Emancipation Proclamation - 1862
The slaves would be free on Jan 1st, 1863. This did not apply to some states though. -
Battle of Gettysburg - 1863
The longest/bloodiest fight ever. About 51,000 people died. 23,049 Unions died and 28,063 Confederates died. After, Lincoln had the Gettysburg Address. -
Battle of Vicksburg - 1863
The Union attacked the town of Vicksburg. They kept on attacking and attacking until the Confederates had to surrender. The Union was driving people out and starving so they had to start shooting their horses and eventually eating rats sometimes. -
Appomattox Courthouse - 1865
The town of Petersburg fell to the Union and then the next day the capital of the Confederates fell, and the war was over!!!
