    William Lloyd Garrison who was an anti-slavery supporter. he wanted to end slavery and created the liberator.

    Compromise of 1850- passed
    Henry Clay wanted a compromise. They passed a new Fugitive slave act which helped a slave you could go to prison or be fine. Slavery would be illegal in Washington D.C. and California woud be a free state. Also other territories would be able decide if they wanted slavery or not.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin-Published
    Created by Harriet Beecher Stowe, but she used Tom's experience. The book changed the view people had on slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act-Passed

    Kansas-Nebraska Act-Passed
    Stephen Douglas proposed a bill called popular sovereignty. This would decide if salvery would be allowed in the Kansas and Nebraska Territories. They also repealed the Missouri Compromise.
  • James Buchanan Sworn into office as the 15th president

    James Buchanan Sworn into office as the 15th president
    James buchanan beat the republican John C. Fermont in the election. James got 174 electoral votes he also one all of the southern states except Maryland.

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was an enslaved African American. MIssouri was a slave state also where his owner lives. Then they moved to Illinois, which was a free state, so he sued for his freedom. Eventually, the case reached the Supreme Court. They said that you couldn't take property and slavery was protected in the Constitution.

    John Brown's Raid at Harper's Ferry
    John Brown wanted to take weapons from a federal storage site to give to enslaved African Americans. Then he wanted to start an uprising against their owners. They ended up failing and John Brown recieved a death sentence.

    Lincoln was elected the president, he was the 16th president. He was the first Republican president. The party wanted to ban slavery in the new U.S. territories.

    South Carolina Secedes from the Union
    South Carolina didn't trust the Republicans to protect there rights. They were the first state to secede. Many states seceded after South Carolina did.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter Begins

    Battle at Fort Sumter Begins
    Abe Lincoln got a message that said that the fort was low on supplies and the Confederates wanted a surrender. The Confederates attacked the Americans troops. Eventually, Fort Sumter surrendered. The battle ended April 14, and after this the Civil War started.

    The Union was trying to attack the Confederacy, but they were saved by another troop. The South won, but the North attacked several times. This was the first major land battle of the Civil War.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It said that slaves within the rebellion states had to be set free. Many slaves didn't get set free right away. This also allowed black people to fight in the Civil War.

    The Confederacy met the Union when they were going to get supplies. After many days of fighting, the North won. Many people died in the fight. This battle ended July 3, 1863.
  • Shermans March into the Sea Begins

    Shermans March into the Sea Begins
    Even though the Confederates weren't doing so well, they still continued to fight. Sherman and a troop burned many cities on his way to the Atlantic Ocean, he was on his way to join Grant's forces to capture Richmond. The battle ended December 21, 1864.

    The Surrender at Appomattox Court House
    The Confederates got a letter from the Union asking them to surrender, but they wanted to keep fighting. The Unions took the Confederates food so they would starve. Both troops met at the Appomattox Court House, the general for the Confederates surrendered.

    President Lincoln was at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. John Wilkes Booth was Lincoln's killer. The death shocked many people.
